Hi there,

I am looking to buy my son a gaming pc and I have been offered the following spec for £400

AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7ghz CPU, Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card, 16gb RAM Corsair Vengance and 480GB M.2 SSD

Can anyone tell me if this is a decent price for the money?

We already have a monitor.

Thank you

Brand new, a 2070 is fairly close to the 6600 (6600 is slower, especially at higher resolutions, see here), while the 2700X is slower for games than a 12100 or Ryzen 5500, which are considered the baseline low-end CPUs:
(video includes a 2700X)

Here's a sort of similar performing entry-level spec:

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £628.87 (includes delivery: £7.99)

The 2700X and 2070 should be able to play any game at 1080p, though some of the newer AAA games will struggle due to the poor single core/thread performance of the 2700X. Anything a little older will run just fine.

Is building your own an option? The 2070 goes for about £150 second hand, the CPU about £50 so the rest of the rig is costing you £200, you could potentially build for the same total cost but maybe get to choose your parts.

If you spend a little more time posting to get over the 1000 mark you should gain Members Market access, not many more to go and you can get some fantastic deals.

The following was going for £600 on there the other day:

Specs:
i7 11700
Asetek 240mm AIO
Asus PRIME B560-PLUS
32GB (2x 16GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 3200MHz
MSI 3070 VENTUS 3X OC
512GB Samsung PM9A1 PCIE Gen4
1TB Seagate BarraCuda
Corsair CV650
ThermalTake V200 TG RGB Edition
Intel AX200 with Bluetooth
Windows 11 Home activated

I realise it's 50% more in cost, but it's a hell of a lot more rig for the money. Even without going with a pre-made rig like that, you could easily get a 3600/3700X/B450/RAM bundle for £150 or under tbh.

My knowledge is limited in this area and just want to get the best deal for his birthday money!

Seee if you can find out what motherboard, RAM and PSU it has. If they're ok then £400 isn't awful :)
You'll hopefully have a decent mobo that you could update the BIOS on and pop in a 5000 series CPU down the line for a bit of an upgrade.

Blimey, that just knocked 4 months off you're target...come on man, we're cheering for you.....you're nearly there.....like watching someone crawl to the finish line after hitting the wall in a marathon
And when you crawl over the finish line, the clouds will part, a beam of sunlight will hit you as you stand and look across the part of the forum called the members market...
Then reality hits you as someone pins a badge to you and tells you, well done, now move along

going back to original question...saw a 3070fe recently sell for £265, a 5600x for £85 (tamzzy I believe :)) ...you can buy a new 1tb decent ssd for £65(£40 for pcie4 500gb) and new 32gb ram 3200c16 for £60(£35 fro 16gb but really want to target 32gb now)...so a like for like with 3070/5600x and new 16gbram/500gb gen4 is £425
...so I wouldn't say £400 for a R7 2700, 16gb ram, 480gb ssd and rtx2070 is that great, as slower gpu, slower cpu, likely will be slower ram and nowadays you really want 1tb min for storage..games are getting large...
