Hey guys i just needed some advice, i have sent off some emails and had some replys about a paid years work in IT before i go off to university (gap year) which would be full time. RM computers are keen to take me on for a year but also my cousin who owns his own shop doing what i do best (building pcs and it support) wants to take me on too. :)

I have the problem that im unsure to what pay i should be expecting.

Im 18, just about to get back A levels worth about 240-260 ucas points and this is my first job in IT.

Would £9500 a year + holiday and benifits such as company van and lifts if needed be good for 9am - 5.30pm full time

I also have the moral dilema that im working for family so quitting the job or complaining wouldnt be easy as its complicated. however i know i can do the job easy and therefore its much better than catering part time (which IS awefull!)

Cheers guys, what are your views

The wage is a bit low, see if you can negotiate, but whatever happens with that, RM will look good on your CV and open a lot more door to the future then a small shop.

im not related to him but through my cousin is married to him so its not blood related and therefore wouldnt be put down as family, yet i would be working for the shop as a technician and its a full time position, i currently earn like maximun of £3000 a year on 3 days a week so obviously thats why i have no idea of what pay to expect as i havnt got a job doing what i do best, only part time work

Rm are still getting back to me, this is why im considering this job with the shop as its been offered with details etc

im at operanorth on my placement on 9.5k. im 21 though after 2 years of uni. Its usual for placement to rob you blind though. 9.5k is still better than nothing like at uni

of course he can put family as a reference; he is doing a job there after all. depends if you are going to have more responsibility with the family job. saying that working for a bigger org will open more doors and look better on the cv. both have their merits/demerits

Placement jobs in sandwhich courses seem to range from £10k - 14k depending on the company and your qualifications. For pre-uni work expect to be at the lower end.

I say this in every job thread because its my biggest regret: relevent work experience is more valuable to a prospective employer than most other things. A job with RM or another IT corp will give you an extra step above other grads with plain old degrees and nothing else :D

This is very true. I would jump at the chance dispite it low pay.

I got about £29,000 including my expenses with my placement, with about £17,500 stipend. If you get a good placement they can pay well enough.

9,500 looks incredibly low, and possibly below the legal minimum, heck the legal minimum for a PhD is 12.5, and I'm applying for PhD paying near £20K

so your saying not to expect more than £10,000 anyways, i do understand that job relevance is key, but to add to the problem, im trying to get into marketing and i have been told its impossible to get a job in marketing before uni, its even competitive after university so at the moment i could just use my skills to work in an environment i know (my cousins) or attempt to get a different position in the IT industry

Hm, seems to be one of these heart/head decisions. I would say go with RM, as In the long term, it may help your career. If you are on very good terms with the shop owner, you could always ask whether he would take you back if things don't work out at RM. On my year out placement aged 18, I think my salary was about £200 (+40/50 travelling) per week. That is a bit more than what they are offering so you could try negotiating a bit. If your plans were opening your own pc business at some point, then maybe staying in the shop would be more fitting.

Its not below the legal limit. Why dont you try and go back to your placement after you finish your degree?

I also wanted to stay in Leeds for my placement because I like it so much :)
After my final year I will be looking for jobs paying around 20k. One of the things I got from my placement was a shed load of experience. I was made a domain admin after about a month and left in charge of backups, active directory and parts of exchange etc. I didnt really do it for the money. It has supported my better lifestyle though :)

but yeah, experience is very important, and you can't expect to jump into the top end. Work you way up a ladder- this expereicne at 9.5k, then try and take a gap year in uni at 14K, a basic job after uni for a year at 22k, then start looking for the real jobs.

 What industry? No-one pays figures like that, that I'm aware of! Also as far as I'm aware there is no 'legal limit' on PhD wages, a friend of mine is on less than that. I believe the only minimum would be the mimimum wage.

Because I hate working in IT, and the companyhave some major financial issues. IF they start hiring again I might get back there in a few years, an easy step into the USA.

I agree. £29000 = BS
