RM computers, the largest(?) educational distributor and manufacturer of pcs to schools and other markets. :) i think..

My other option was Sophos who are very local to me, they might be worth a shot too :p

 What industry? No-one pays figures like that, that I'm aware of! Also as far as I'm aware there is no 'legal limit' on PhD wages, a friend of mine is on less than that. I believe the only minimum would be the mimimum wage.

Was working for Sun Microsystems in the US, wasn't your every day placement. Doing software and hardware support for the big boys like US military and Ebay/google etc. The novelty of playing around with 1/4 million dollar systems wares off after a few months though. I once loaded up an E15K with $200,000 worth of memory- when your fingers start bleeeding and your halfway done the appeal is quickly lost.

Funded PhD have to be about ~12.5K min depending upon the funding body. The standard funding such ERSC etc have a min of 12.3-12.6, and you sometimes get a bit more. An industry funded PhD is often around 17.5k. All tax free of course.

Hang on then, were your previous figures dollars or pounds. As I find it hard to believe that you would be earning that much money fitting memory into a 15k (amongst other things). I mean I've done that and I'm a complete monkey.

TBH i would go with RM if anything, at the end of the day putting on your CV (Worked in a shop Building computer) will not help you getting a job, as a job in a big company will hardly result in you Building computers.

Plus the CV will thrive more excellence if the Company is as big as possible.

I'd say 14K would be appropriate. However its hard without looking at the job description and your CV.

Sid, as for placements there are a few special ones which pay quite a lot but obviously don't expect to sit around doing nothing. I've got a selection of friends currently on placement, a friend working at Goldman Sachs is currently on 30K during placement. Another friend is at Lehman Brothers, earning 26K. Two other friends from the same University, Bath who didn't get amazing grades (50-60% compared to 80%+ average) are getting around 14K. Don't get me wrong, the high paying placements aren't entirely easy to secure.

I personally feel it depends on the application and how hard you are prepared to go.

Definetly try Sophos, another large company, and you may learn some important stuff about security.

Yeh my dad managed to get a very good job there breifly as a sales executive and its all very nice there, im gonna fire off my CV and covering letter.

I am very lucky as i know the marketing manager at RM computers and he managed to spice up my CV and covering letter with help from their HR department, which is why i say im in a good position with them as my CV has been tailored by their very own HR recruitment, therefore applying with my CV should give good results as it should now fit all their needs! :p

I just chucked my CV to fujitsu with no work experience and they hired my for £7 an hour on frontline support immedietly.

Seemed pretty easy to me and looks good on my CV :)

How have you found them? I've heard from a few people that to avoid fujitsu.

I've just ordered 70 more fujitsu workstations from Fujisu Siemens. I've found their customer support to be top notch, and I've had to use them on more then one occasion.

I'd highly recommend them.

Money was in pounds, was paid $30,000 (back when the exchange rate was a little better). Was also paid living expenses, which totaled just under $19K dollars, flights, medical insurance + other expenses over $50K total. 50/1.7 (the exchange rate back then ~= 29k for a placement,17.5K stipend.

The job entailed drinking lots of coffee, office olympics, lab limbo, royal rumble, and doughnuting in the carpark. :p
