First PC build help

Well this is fun :D I have display but it's kindly telling me i've installed the ram wrong again! Third time lucky!

Also, sorry but you've lost me with regards to the PCI power cables. Am I to disconnect the independent cable that was in the box and just us the one hard wired to the PSU?

No, use both - the hard wired and the one you had to connect to the PSU. You require two independent cables to power that card.

Look at @tamzzy's code diagram - explains it perfectly.

@tamzzy's code worded slightly differently:

Code:
PSU hard wired cable -------------------> PCIE --> GPU
spare connector flopping about (then neatly zip tied)

PSU manually connected cable -------------------> PCIE --> GPU
spare connector flopping about (also then neatly zip tied)

Just to confirm this is the MSI Geforce 2080 I went for so there is a 6 and 8 pin connectors. Which cable for each or does it not matter?

Trying to work out how to get pictures on here.

Think I'm loosing the plot with the ram...I was originally in Slots B2 and A2 no display. Changed to A1 and A2 and now get a display but bios is telling me to change back to B2 and A2 for best performance?

As long as you have 2 independent cables going into the card it doesn't matter.

Memory either:

B2 and A2

or

B1 and A1

Pick which ever gives you more room to work with.

doesn't matter. the cables are 6+2 pins. so for the 8 pin connector, all 8 pins are connected
for the 6 pins, 6 pins are connected, 2 are flopping about.

A2B2 is correct.

normally gigabyte boards will have ram config like this:

CPU -> blank ram slot -> ram -> blank slot -> ram

to connect the gpu - what i mean is:
(NB my gpu is 2x8 pin, so just imagine the 2nd 8 pin is a 6 pin and leave the 2 extra pins flopping about :)

Makes perfect sense now thanks.

Less laughing though please guys, I'm going to have to move this damn fan on the cooler once again to move the ram!! :D

ikr. bloody joker speccing a 1kg lump of metal. sigh.
I'll post him my old Silver Arrow, which i use as a shelf ornament in my study, he'll soon stop complaining.

*I would steralise it first as it still has most of my DNA soaked in it (blood - i mean blood).

It’s genuinely a superb cooler, I personally wouldn’t have recommended it for a newbie, but sometimes jumping in the deep end is the best way forward :D

If it’s any consolation, it’s not the worst situation; try fitting a cpu block, gpu block, 360 rad, 240 rad, reservoir, pump, drain, five disks and three PCI-E cards into a Meshify C. Every time I have to change something a wave of depression washes over me :D
