Hi everyone, first off, love the idea with the mafia ranking,i feel at home! i`m Sicilian :D .Anyway,i was planning on buying a dual core bundle from this site, but funds have taken down turn.So i`m stuck with my current setup.I have decided to upgrade the memory as i`ll be stuck with this setup until at least March :( , these are the specs

Asus PTGD1-LA Motherboard (socket LGA775) micro ATX
P4 3.4Ghz hyperthreading
1Gig of RAM 2x 512 (infineon) whatever that is!!
ATI X1900XT-X Gfx Card
Western digital Caviar 250 Gig
Samsung Spinpoint 250 Gig
Akasa 460Watt PSU

I need to know which is the best available RAM (2Gig) for this setup please, it has to be DDR not DDR2 (or so i`ve been told),and from Overclockers site.I know!!, my system ain`t that great. But as i said , i`m stuck with it for a while yet.Any help /advice would be great. Thanks :)

At present memory prices are high, not a good time to buy.

What are your plans in March?

As which one is best, do you plan to O/C?

If not buy the cheapest DDR 400, maybe a value set

I would check the MB web site to see the memory qualified vendor’s lists, just in case a compatibility problem before you buy.

It will most likely be later than march i`m affraid, but i intend to build a completely new system, the one i have at the moment will be going to my Brother,he won`t be upgrading it ,so i don`t mind buying him good quality RAM.I found this regarding what the board supports,

so,based on that, any suggestions?,as it`s for my Brother,i guess i`ll stretch to the best available  , i want to make it as good as i can for him.On the subject of overclocking, yes, i plan to overclock my new build, hopefully with some help from you guys.I`ve bought from overclockers for ages, great company, and a great forum for back up.

Hi Paolo,

I am unable to locate any details of your MB on the ASUS web site, from what you listed it would seem that the computer is HP/Compaq based. I found this information on the HP site.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=c00208497&lc=en

As this MB was properly manufactured for HP, therefore it may have very limited O/C capability.

I suggests that you have a look on the HP/Compaq web site for approved memory modules.

You will need to find which model your computer is first.

Or use a Memory Advisor tool to find the right memory upgrade which GUARANTEES your money back. (Which can be found on the Crucial, Kingston, Corsair web sites etc)

The system was originally a compaq sr1180uk the only thing left from the original is the mobo and memory. After a bit of thinking, maybe i`d be better buying him a DDR2 Mobo and some DDR2 memory?,can you guys tell me the best option for a motherboard and DDR2 memory.I will be using the p4 CPU from the existing Mobo,it doesn`t have to be a micro ATX board because i`m using a brand new Soprano Case. I might as well make it a Christmas present for him,so, let`s say, £400 budget for the Mobo and Memory, whilst taking into account that i`ll be using the P4 CPU that`s already in the existing Mobo. Thanks for the help guys, i really appreciate it :)

Hi Paolo,

That will be a nice Xmas present for him

You better off starting a new thread in the MB section with your request, you will also need to include a power supply unit as well in your budget as most MB need extra power.

To get you started you could take a look at

Asrock ConroeXFire-eSATA2 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard Price: £53.99 (£63.44 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Note : New MB's are due to be release very soon with a new chipset, you go with one of them or pick up one of the older models boards when the price drops.

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC2-6400 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) (MY-072-OC) Price: £159.99 (£187.99 Including VAT at 17.5%)

As for PSU I would go with a 600w min for your system

OCZ GameXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply (CA-018-OC)
Price: £69.99 (£82.24 Including VAT at 17.5%)

Delivery £10 (approx)

Have you built a computer before?

Thanks Simon, yes,i`ve built before, but after discovering this forum, and knowing there is backup, i`ve decided to build a really good high end system.I checked on the crucial site for a compatible memory match for the Asus board, choice is very limited i discovered. So,the sensible thing is to bin the Mobo and upgrade i reckon. Thanks again mate :)
