First thoughts on my X2 4800+...

Went from a 3500+ to a x2 4800+...the difference is awesome in windows. Everything, especially image/video editing is sooo quick. Games are very similar in performance, if not a little quicker. I think its money well spent!

Incidentally I just installed the amd driver, windows automatically switched to multicore processor!

i've got a 4800+ 2 weeks ago.
iam now running at 2.8 ghz stable and don't notice any difference
from my 2.8ghz 146 opteron
i don't have any drivers or optimizer installed.

Can you give me a few more details on your overclock. Setup, bios info, divider, fsb, cooling and your temps please.

I have been fiddling around for most of the day and am struggling to get stable over 2.65. My load temps never get past 51 degrees so its not a temp issue with me.

I went from a 2.6 ghz opteron 146 to a 2.93 ghz opty 165 and noticed a huge difference, so it's not all bad news. Though that may have something to do with the 300mhz increase in clock speed. :p

Well I spent a fruitless few hours yesterday trying to clock the 4800+ and it won't. The best I have been able to get is 2.6 stable, although I have throttled that back to 2.56 because of the amount of extra vaults I have to pump through it.

Temps never got over 55 degrees and that was putting 1.5 vaults through it at 2.75. I had no problems getting into windows etc but as soon as I ran stress tests it failed.

Tried every variant of multiplier and fsb with no results. Quite dissapointing really, but still happy with the purchase as being able to multitask is a boon.

System is noticably slower in single tasks though but thats to be expected as my 3700 was clocked at 2.8.

Hi 2bullish have you given it time to burn in had same problem with my 4800 x2 that i just picked up friday (not from OcUK prices to high. take note OcUK) would not clock over 2540 FSB, been running prime over night set to the most stable clock left it on went to bed, has of to days post got it up to 2710. still more testing to do.

*** settings are you using to get that clock and whats your hardware spec and temps mate?

put simply mate, dual core is un-necessary unless you want to encode video whilst playing a game or something like that.

I know, I have argued the case myself but I still want two chips rather than one, as I have already bitten the bullet, I just want to know how to get the best out of what I have now.

Decisions Decisions, I was so tempted to buy this ! But must resist !

If only games took advantage of dual core now :(

Do you know what stepping you have? As looking at your temps these AMD dual cores don't like much over 50c and unless you have a really good stepping your overclock on air seems about right. Not seen many x2's get above 2.7 only opterons really.

I think you're just doing the wrong tests.

F@H - runs on idle priority so will just give up CPU to anything which needs it.
Burning - uses pretty much no CPU at all

That just leaves you with the CoD, which is gonna max one core and that's it.

dual core helps greatly if you like to encode video and backup dvd. My 3800X2 gives double speed over my barton 3200+.

The amd cpu driver is an important part if you want the system to be a little more responsive and less stutter in games. The optimiser and ms hotfix are not important and do more to break softwre then get em working in my own experience.

Buy a super quick grapics card instead.

Wish i had done!

Well my Dual +4400 is in heaven when rendering 3D images. Dual cores have been a blessing for mayor movie studios and or animations.

Then again King Kong was finished only thanks to the Intel's 2.8GHz xeon's super render farm !!! (about 1200 CPU's).

That's a big electric bill.

Well after much sweat and gnashing of teeth I've finally got to my max.

11.5 x 230 = 2645

Volts 1.45

Temp using GO blend 54 degrees

I can boot into windows and use the computer happily, including gaming, at 2.75, but any significant stress testing stops.

The same core (core 0) always craps out first, Prime95 run on Core 1 will happily run for ever at 2.7 for hours. So I've been limited by one of the cores.

Thought those temps were high so just reseated the HSF and I'm down to 52 degrees.

I have to stress its very hot in Mnachester tonight, really close, so my ambients are high, normal weather would probably have that down to under 50.

Think I might invest in some superior cooling, probably a Ninja, thoughts people?

Why not go water if your want to overclock in future?

How many different air coolers have you bought, if like me then your half way to paying for water & you won't need to change with the socket ;)
