First Time Build Advice

Hi guys

First of all I have very limited experience building PC’s, in fact the last time I did so was around 12 years ago. My father who sadly passed away did most of the work mind you.

I am having somewhat of a dilemma, the primary worry been the availability of parts when the new hardware releases, specifically CPU (Nvidia 3080) and GPU (Zen 3). With no release date for Zen 3 these concerns are amplified.

At present I do not have a PC. I have been waiting patiently for these releases for the past few months. I have a few parts already:
Corsair RM750X
WD Black 1TB NVME
Lian Li 011 Dynamic Space Grey

the options I have been considering are:
A) Hold out and have faith that I can pick up a Nvidia 3080 And something along the lines of a 4700x. This will most likely be paired with a X570 Tomahawk.

B) Pick up a B450 and Ryzen 3600 combo. Then hope to get a Nvidia 3080 next month. This would then put me on until zen 4, which I hear should be a huge move forward. I would most certainly upgrade to zen 4 at this point. (I realise I would need to update the motherboard too.)
would I have a bottle next using the b450 and 3600 in the interim?

Primary uses of system is (hopefully)4K gaming, media playback and browsing.

Big Navi will probably next year but who knows.

Zen 4 will probably be the end of 2021 according to digital trends.

Get the tomhawk x570 mobo and whichever cpu you want to use as a stop gap.

Get some ddr 4000mhz if cheap enough.

Will the X570 Tomahawk support Gen 4 or is it going to be a new socket? This potential issue has me concerned as buying an expensive motherboard for one generation of CPU’s is disheartening.

no unfortunately I don’t have a spare GPU. I have a Nvidia 8800S from my first ever build but I don’t believer that will be compatible ;)

(and servers need all the available bandwidth likely using lots of DDR5 chips helping to keep prices up)

Unless really having money or needing long time platform also B550 gives PCIe v4 for CPU connected slots.

Do you mean require DDR5 to function at all? Or just give good performance gains?

Highly regarded B550’s seem to be quite expensive to me. See a lot of people saying just go X570 due to small price differences

This will not be a bottleneck at all :

With the b450m mortar max you'll be sorted you will not lose any frames over a more expensive x570 motherboard.

You will have the exact same experience.

Thank you for the feedback. This is making the decision even harder :). I thought everyone would just say it was a bad idea not to buy the latest parts at this time.

Lots of people buy overpriced motherboards. (same for X570)
There are some better priced B550 boards like Aorus Elite.


Only for the low end price point.

THE Aorus Elite does look good. However I need Wi-Fi. Any suggestions of a alternative with Wi-Fi?
 
An update and a need for more advice here guys.

I decided to buy the X570 Tomahawk. Current situation is as follows; I have all parts for my build except the CPU, RAM and GPU. As you can imagine I am extremely eager to get building. I have no other working systems.

would it be a good idea for me to pick up a cheap 3200G to put into the Tomahawk? This way at least I can get something running and test out the parts I have sat waiting. I am worried that I won’t be able to get hold of a ‘next gen’ card due to demand and Zen 3 news is hard to come by.

Also can anyone confirm if the Nvidia 8800GTS I have sat in a cupboard would be compatible with 3200G?
 
Sorry for the confusion.

Ultimate goal is to install zen 3 processor and most likely Nvidia 3080.

I am trying to work out the most cost effective way of getting something up and running now prior to been able to get the new parts. Maybe the best method is to pick something up with a good resell value?

I thought maybe the cheapest APU would allow me to put everything together that way I have something I can use and can check my parts.
