first time build, boot trouble.

Your rig is almost identical to mine. I had a very similar problem - upping the RAM voltage solved it and I think it's very likely it will solve your issue too.

Check to make sure, but I'd imagine your RAM should run at 2.1v.

The double-boot issue is common with the IP35 boards. I have the same problem.
It can be fixed with a BIOS flash. For more information see: http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=445141

does the double boot actually matter? i can live with it to be honest, unless its affecting other things. and thanks for the RAM advice, would the wrong voltage cause a problem starting windows on an old hard drive?

Personally, I don't believe the double boot to be that much of an problem. Apparently it's an inherent issue stemming from the P35 chipset.

I read about someone complaining about it creating unecessary strain on his hard drives or something. I'm not sure how scientifically correct that is, but I'm fairly sure it's not causing any real issues apart from just being a minor nuisance. If you like rebooting a lot - then perhaps it will be putting a bit more strain on your components than you should be.

I tend to keep my comuputer running most of the time, and hence it's rarely an issue at all for me anyway.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by the second question. Basically, if the RAM voltage is too low, you can think of the RAM not having enough 'juice'. So whenever RAM is being used the lack of volts means that (to get slightly scientific) there's not enough force on the electrical charge powering the RAM. It's almost like a toy struggling to run on a low battery. It might work sometimes, but without the correct amount of 'juice' (i.e. voltage set too low) it is likely to cause stability issues (such as when booting windows).

removed mobo battery and started again. changed ram voltage, booted from windows cd and deleted my old partion on the hard drive. created a new partition and now its formatting the hard drive. hopefully this should work........ thanks for all the help guys.

partioned the hard drive, and it seemed like windows was gonna start but it said the ntds was missing. when i deleted the old partition there was one that said ntds but seemed really small, and one that seemed like the whole hard drive. so i deleted both of these partitions, it seems like i should have kept the first partition. how can i create this partition?
ps. i think it said ntds, might be ntls or something similiar.

its ntps. tried it all again, removed battery etc. now its offering me a choice of partitions on which to install xp. the main one that i set up is C: partition 1 (NTPS) 70000mb free). this is just my 70 gb hard drive right? so why is it saying ntps missing when i try and boot when the partition says ntps, and the previous formatting and installation seemed to go fine?

You mean NTFS, right?

seems a good link but at the recovery console it only asked what id like to open and wouldnt let me type more than 1 character. am trying again. cheers

the first two commands arent recognised and the third results in "the file name, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. any ideas guys???????

I don't understand, you have actually installed the Windows files and not just partitioned the drive? Why did you have to remove the battery again?
Last time I had errors in Windows setup was due to memory/motherboard complaints, updated bios fixed the problems.

Edit: Was it a new hard-disk you used when you built this PC or were you using one from a previous pc?
Double edit: I'm not sure the recovery console is any use to you as it doesn't sound like you've properly installed Windows yet?

im not sure windows was installed as it crashed as the installation was ending and it said 'starting windows'.
it was an old hard disk when i built the rig
and i took out the battery again to start from scratch and try booting from the cd, only because it was a bit tempramental booting after id first tried.
