First time doing a bbq!

Hi all. First time doing a bbq, and I feel I have a lot to learn. I bought a cheap oil drum charcoal bbp from argos, and now whats next? What kind of charcoal do I need;is best, some say I shouldn't light the charcoal with a lighter, so what do I use please. Also I'm into recycling a lot, what can I do with the bbp ashes, can I use them as grass fertiliser?. Sorry in advance if the post is scilly.

At least you started off down the right track and bought a charcoal BBQ. Not a gas hob for use outside.

Vegan cheese is definitely improving, the one on Wednesday melted nicely on my plant based feast........
About 20 years ago, I went to a health food shop with my mum's vegan colleague (that was the only place you could get vegan/DF stuff from) and the cheese was all the same - looked like a solid camembert with labels saying Red Leicester style, Cheddar style, Blue cheese style.

I didn't see any mention of cooking meat in the opening post. Maybe OP is happy to rip a life form out of the ground which was happily growing away, then barbarically hack it to pieces and roast the pieces on a BBQ

I don't think it's my imagination that charcoal makes the food taste better. I find it's worth the faff. But it is a faff! :D

I'd second those chimneys. They make the hardest job (getting it going) much easier.
Have you noticed much difference in the taste though? From charcoal to electric?

Buy a chimney starter.
Buy some natural firelighters.
Buy good charcoal.
Put a couple of the firelighters on the grill.
Light them.
Put the chimney on top.
Wait till it looks all hot.
Pour the charcoal into HALF of the bottom.
Sear your meat above the coals (keep a close eye on it)
Move it to the other side to finish with the lid on.

Something like that :D
this op, well put haha!

I've moved over to wood twizzler things as my fire lighters of choice.
essebtially just wood shavings compacted together
bbq chimney 100%

I do vegan bbq. It makes it easy as don't need to worry about food poisoning. Beyond burgers are great on bbq

Yeah that's a positive point there regarding food poisoning... I'd try a Beyond Burger if it was offered but I wouldn't buy it in case I didn't like it and had to throw it out....or live in my freezer for all eternity

I like them. I even like them more than beef now. They are pea protein based which makes them a bit more "meaty" than others.

But yes. They are much better than cheap beef burgers!
