First time DSLR... help please :)

Right, now at the point of purchase... 40D seems too expensive to be honest, and im having a bit of a problem finding them!

They arnt on that cameraprice site and not overly willing to trust minor seeming shops that google shopping find for me :(

Badtimes.

You'll only find them used (discontiuned a while back)

Expect to pay £400 used. Buy from talkphotography or fleabay or MPB or Mifsuds or FFordes or Aperture UK.

Or buy a 30D for about £250 - 90% the same for about £250.

Sadly tho, we are not going to buy my dad a used camera for his 50th... :( So will need to be new... which i know is a shame as i love 2nd hand everything! lol

To be honest if he wants to use his old lenses then a Pentax might be a better shout - they used to use the same M42 mount as the Practikas and there are loads of M42 to K-mount adapters available (you'll have to control focus and aperture manually though). Trouble is a K-x with an 18-55 kit lens runs to about £400 and I guess this is a little over budget for you, although it's a cracking camera.

www.warehouseexpress.com is easily the best web retailer in the uk. Usually good prices, excellent customer service and website.

www.dpreview.com is the best place to go for camera reviews. Go there for detailed info once you have a couple of models to pitch against each other...

I'd stick with canon or nikon if he's interested in buying into the system and building a collection. Scrap the old stuff no point buying a pentax just so you can use a few junky lenses. Manual focus on non pro bodies is a waste of time anyway without focusing aids:)
