First time flying

I've never actually flew in a passenger plane. But, from what I've been told, prepare to be packed in tighter than sardines in a tin.:(

And from what you have been told, that absolute tosh even in econo class it isnt that bad but then i guess it all depends on who you fly with and where.

As for tips??, tbh just chill and relax and enjoy the flight, get a window seat if you can so you can see the taking off and landing bits :p...thats the fun bit. Otherwise its kinda boring, take something with you like a book, mp3 player or if u have one a handheld console like the psp. I always take mine along with me on my flights and it keeps me amused for a few hrs.

Theres something on the wing!!!

Tip: Closing your eyes and pretending its not real does not help.

Oh and if the numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 appear anywhere during the flight, you're screwed :p

BA was a big wimp, there's nothing to worry about.

The takeoff is exciting, once your up you'll be fine and I always love the landing.

Have a good time

Barcelona? It's only a few hours away, try Oz 13 hours to Singapore , a 2 to 4 hour wait then only another 8 to Sydney. To be serious though, nothing to be afaid of, the take offs great, then it's total boredom to you land. Hight doesn't come into it, you're so high it looses it meaning. Walk up + down every 2 hours as you really don't want DVT

Buy yourself a flight simulator and play it non stop for as long as you can. Then, should something go wrong you'll be able to take control, land that sucker, save loads of llives and get to sleep with the prettiest stewardess (and her pal) ;)

Rumack: You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.
Elaine Dickinson: A hospital? What is it?
Rumack: It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.
:D

Edit: And this is Scuzi's kind of crew:

Roger Murdock: Flight 2-0-9'er, you are cleared for take-off.
Captain Oveur: Roger!
Roger Murdock: Huh?
Tower voice: L.A. departure frequency, 123 point 9'er.
Captain Oveur: Roger!
Roger Murdock: Huh?
Victor Basta: Request vector, over.
Captain Oveur: What?
Tower voice: Flight 2-0-9'er cleared for vector 324.
Roger Murdock: We have clearance, Clarence.
Captain Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?
Tower voice: Tower's radio clearance, over!
Captain Oveur: That's Clarence Oveur. Over.
Tower voice: Over.
Captain Oveur: Roger.
Roger Murdock: Huh?
Tower voice: Roger, over!
Roger Murdock: What?
Captain Oveur: Huh?
Victor Basta: Who?
:D

My favourite, favourite quote though, is this one:

You can guess by now said:
There's no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you'll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?

how do you go about flying commercial aircraft? any commercial pilots about?
There was one I think. I'm working towards it at the moment, although I'm somewhere between the first and second step. It's a big ladder. :(

Remember, pilots are very good. Unless we are drunk.

Last year when we were coming home from Tunisia we had to wait 3 hours for a co-pilot. We landed at Manchester Airport and the pilot announced "Just to let you know that we're sorry for the delay and we didn't really need the co-pilot because the plane took off itself, flew itself and landed itself" and all the passengers went "ooooh".

There is def one pilot here, chrismox, he flys 737s. I'm half way thro my training at the moment and will be qualified at the end of the year.

Basically the way you go about it is that you pay around £50,000 and then around 18months later you can start applying for jobs. There are two actual ways, you can do whats called the modular route where you start with a Private pilots licence and then keep on training, doing the commercial licence and instrument rating as seperate modules. The second way is to do it as a single 'integrated' course which will take you from nothing to a CPL/IR (what you need to fly commercially) There are no sponsorships available for becoming a pilot, the only way you'll get your flying paid for is if you join the RAF.

aww it iwll be fine, i used to lvoe flying but for some reason as iv got older iv gone off it, i think from all the paranoia the world has nowadays. I get abit nervous but then I get there and im like whatwas i worrying about?!?!

The ears popping is annoying, and hurts abit but it soon passes! I stick my fingers in my ears and suck on a boily sweet, it helps a little (i think) hehe

You get amazing views, so make sure u sit by the window!!! The clouds looks so beautiful from up there!

If you get turbulence and the planes gets a bit juddery, try not to worry either, the pilots know what they are doing!

Hope you have a great holiday xxx

My tip... tell the hottest air hostess you can find that you have a slight fear of flying and she will give you all the attention in the world ;)

Hey Rich1988, Im a pilot. Just got one stage left which is a type rating on a large jet and then I'll be flying commercially. Blinkz's pretty much listed the ways about becoming an airline pilot. There is at least one pure sponsorship, and thats with GAPAN - Guild for Air Pilots and Air Navigators. (Google it) They offer 6 scholarships for a Private Licence, and one lucky git each year gets their full ATPL paid for! I was lucky enough to get all my PPL paid through with these guys. And it was a very simple process and I found quite easy to get the money ;) Was a single application form, then a quite easy maths test, followed by a 30/40min interview, and that was it, bingo, 5 g's to fly with! So if you wanna get started, get a few trial lessons, start saving the money asap, and then maybe apply to these guys.

Also Ive done my training with a company called CTC. Very good place to go, as they pretty much guarantee you a job at the end of the training which is a godsend, as it's almost as hard getting a job as actually doing the training in itself! Its just very competitive to get onto the scheme they offer though. Worth a crack!

As for the OP, its all about the Eustachian tube ;) Just try and yawn as much as poss, practice on the ground before you fly, and you should hear in your head tiny little popping/cracking sounds which is the pressure equalizing, and no more pain! :)

Edit: LOL just realisied I answered another thread about ears popping whilst flying not the first time flying here, oops.

Your GP will give you a sedative (probably Diazepam) if you think you really need it.

It is a well known FACT that flying is the most dangerous way to travel, especially without a plane to keep you up there. Remember, it isn't the falling that kills you, it is the stopping suddenly.

Incorrect. Flying is the safest mode of transport :) infact you have more chance of winning the lottery than been killed in a plane crash statistically.

Travelling by car is the most dangerous form of transportation, FACT.

Statistics

You will eventually die in a car crash 1 in 125
You will be a victim of violence in the suburbs 1 in 2,000
You will develop a brain tumor 1 in 25,000
You will die in a fire this year 1 in 40,000
You will win a state lottery jackpot 1 in 4,000,000
You will be killed in an airplane crash 1 in 4,600,000

I'm also about to fly for the first time and from Newcastle Airport. Only 2 weeks 6 days to go now...scary! Looking forward to it though :)
