First time gamer, do most use arrow keys?

The logitech keyboards with small screens are just a gimmick IMO.

Without any additional software, maybe. Something like LCD host really enhances the G19 though. I've got readouts of network usage, CPU temperatures of all my cores, RAM usage, GPU usage and temps, RSS fees and time and weather, that I can glance at whilst in game.

z,x - strafe left/right
shift - back
Space - jump
ctrl - crouch
alt - walk
Mouse 1 - forward
Mouse 2 - shoot
q,w,e,a,s,d,c - weapons

These are my binds that I've used since '97 from Quake2 up through Q3/Q4/Qlive and other FPS games.

WASD all the way - you get used to it, plus sometimes you will need to use other keys, and they're right beside you.

I have not used the arrow keys in over 20 years.

I agree, but it wasn't always the case. Logitech have gone right downhill in recent years.

But I still have an original G15 V1 keyboard (http://support.logitech.com/en_gb/product/180), purchased in 2006 and it still works perfectly and all of the backlighting still works, as does the screen and media controls. It has had thousands upon thousands of hours use too. Legendary keyboard, and I have contemplated going back to it to be honest. In comparison, my Ducky Shine 3 had LED's going out after only a few months of use :(

It's a shame more games didn't make use of the display natively, I don't have that keyboard but I do have the Z-10 speakers which has the same display and can be used to show the same information, but I've only ever encountered a few games that used it.

Arrow key user here big fingers/hands ment with wsad I was hitting keys I did not want to
with arrow keys I have abit of space I play fps games and never have an issue

Try all combo's tho u can think of and find what you u like best give each key combo a good few hour's of use then pick the 1 that feels the best to you

I used to use space for jumping in Q3. Then discovered binding it to MB2 makes strafe jumping and movement so much easier, particulalry when needing to aim/shoot/change weapons during movement.

I use:

MB1 - Shoot
MB2 - Jump
WSAD - movement
Shift - walk
X - crouch
Space - LG
Q - RL
E - Rail
R - GL
F - SG
MB3 - use
Mouse side button 1 - PG
Mouse side button 2 - MG

Been kicking ass on this layout for years :p

I use arrow keys works for me - never have to look for the additional keys, ctrl = ads, shift = move speed modifier, ins,del, page up/down block for weapon switching/abilities, etc. keypad 0 for crouch and so on, moving to WASD or similar wouldn't change how well I played but doesn't feel comfortable with the canted forward/back keys.

^ This.

Tried WASD etc but it felt odd. Been using arrows for at least 20 years now and I'm against change.

Thats my thinking with arrow keys I wont accidentally hit other keys.

I can use/programme side buttons on my mouse for the other action buttons am thinking.

SO!! is there a keyboard with maybe a centered arrow keys so my keyboards not hanging over the side on my small desk

I'm left handed, so I use the numpad as a replacement for WASD. Specifically
8 - forward
4 - left
6 - right
5 - back

And the keys around as various other things depending on the game. Works quite well.

Left handed mouse user here also.

I use the keypad, 8,4,6,2 for movement. 5 is usually used for reloading or spotting in BF4.

I can reach the arrow keys with my thumb, so these I set up for jump, couch, prone etc. Other stuff like selecting accessories or using items I use the keys around the numberpad '+' for melee, '*' grenades etc.

One of my mates uses a USB numberpad attachment when gaming instead of a keyboard, leave him more space on his desk.

Personally I prefer WASD, but that's from Doom days ;) and way back when AutoCAD encouraged that use too!

Taught myself to use WASD playing Unreal Tournament so that I could change weapons quicker as my mouse didn't have a middle scroll. I'd recommend WASD or similar over the arrows as its less of a stretch to other buttons for sprinting, reloading etc.

Your carpal tunnels will thank you in a few years.

WASD is the best for me as the distance between mouse and keyboard hand positions is perfect and you have enough surrounding keys for everything else you need in game. For FPS games especially you need quite a lot of keys within easy reach so if you want to use the arrows you are going to have to think about what keys you will use for the other functions.

Heres what i use and its pretty much the default in most modern FPS games.

W = forward
S = Backwards
A = Left
D = Right
Z = Lean Left
C = Lean Right
E = Use/Interact
CTRL = Crouch
Shift = Sprint/Steady aim
X = Prone
R = Reload
G = Grenade
F = Special ability
Mouse 1 = Shoot
Mouse 2 = ADS
Mouse side button = Melee
Tab = Scoreboard
Number keys for weapon slots.

W = forward
S = Backwards
A = Left
D = Right
Z = Lean Left
C = Lean Right

That's another reason I use ESDF over WASD: you can have A and G as lean, which feels handier. I also don't like have anything other than crouch below my main finger position, as I don't find the transition to those keys very easy.

I like z and c for leaning as it is possible to press DC or AZ at the same time which allows strafing whilst leaning. Very handy for peaking corners but most games don't support it any more. Q & E also work well for it and some games have that setup as standard but i just can't deal with E not being the use key!

I am starting my 4 year old off on the Cursor keys as its just more logical for a newbie, and her games dont need a mouse yet... But will show her the "proper" way soon enough :)

I think there are more benefits of WASD in terms of proximity to other keys, than there are disadvantages. After a bit you will be glued to them like its second nature,and not taking your eyes off the screen.

WERD

W = Left
E = Forward
R = Right
D = Back
Q = Lean Left
T = Lean Right
F = Interact
Shift = Crouch
Space = Jump
Ctrl = Prone

Mouse 1 = Shoot
Mouse 2 = ADS
Mouse Wheel (Click) = Melee
Mouse Wheel Up/Down = Weapon switch
Mouse 3 (side) = Reload
Mouse 4 (side) = Zoom
Mouse 5 (side) = Grenade

Used to use WSAD, but after many many years of playing Guild Wars I've ended up using WERD, mainly because it keeps my fingers near 1-6 for quick skill activation.

WASD is far better than arrow keys since you have the other keys close for run, reload, use, etc.
Just stick with WASD and you'll soon get used to it without hitting the wrong keys.

you definately wont want to use arrow keys if you plan on playing MMO gamnes, you need a lot of spare keys around your hand to access easily
