hi im new to this overclocking game just got a few questions

1)can i do any dameage to the cpu if i reduce the voltage on an over clock?

iv set the bus speed to 100mhz and over clocked the cpu e6750 to 3gh from 2.66 i droped the voltage down a bit to ?

what do i have to do to the memory i read a lot of you guys say the memory has to be set to 1:1 when you look at it in cpu z mine says FSB VS DRAM 5:6 should i be bothered with that if what i have done so far works? will it make memory performance worse

thanks

Under volting is fine, most motherboards set on auto volts will add far more then is needed.

If u look at the link in my sig, on auto that overclock is like 1.3vcore, but doing it myself shows what its stable at, don't worry if it boots up and is stable under stress programs then its fine.

About the memory, 1:1 divider is generally used when people have reached the max on there memory spec, and have to overclock it. Aslo u may see in the link my memory is in 1:1 that is becuase im using a 400 fsb, and my memory is only 800mhz stuff, so therefor is running at spec speeds, 400 x 2 as its double data rate.

If you can keep under your memorys rated speed using other dividers then do that.

Hope this helps.

hi thanks for the reply just bumped up the oc from 2.66 to 3.2gh,when i cange that dose it effect the ram at all? i have quite good crucial ram not sure what speed 800mhz i think in cpu z it say (bus speed 400mhz) and (rated FSB 1600MHZ) On the dram frq it says 480mhz and the fsb vs dram 5:6 i think what im trying to say badly is will my mem give me worse performance like this? aslo do i need to do oat with voltage regarding this?

cheers

also should i just leave it at this now and test with prime thanks again

yeh every time u bump up your FSB if u don't change the memory divider it will keep raising the memory.

Atm with ur new fsb your memory is effectivly running at 960mhz, and im guessing memory stuff will be set on auto, so the timings on it may not be great. What ever you see cpu-z saying ur memory is at, times it by 2 for its true speed.

If your memory is only 800mhz stuff id advise you for now to try to keep it at 800 or just over, so you may have to use a 1:1 divider now your at 400fsb.

there should be an option if u look closey for changing the memory divider, i would'nt worry to much about the memory voltage for now.

If you want to know what speed ur memory is rated at, click on the SPD tab in cpu-z and where it says max bandwitdh is what there rated at, for example mine says PC2-6400 which is 800mhz memory.

thanks for that yer my mem says pc2-6400 (400mhz) its saying in the mem tab just for info so u can advise me if its ok to leave performance wise

fsb vs dram 5:6
cas# 5 clocks
ras to cas 7 clocks
ras % 7 clocks
cycle time 22 clocks
row refresh 62 clocks
comand rate 2t

hows that lookin ?

i have also run prime for the last 30 mins full test no probs and max temp 41 from 21

Mmm looks like the memory timings are set to auto, and as the memory is being overclocked by quite abit, the timings are really poor.

This is what i would do, go into ur bios, look for the memory bit, change the fsb vs dram to 1:1, then reboot into windows, and those readings should look a lot better.

what would that look like there is some thing thats says spd then a load of values like 2.00
3.33,4.00 or if i press crrl f1 i can alter things manual like how would i get one to on its a award bios on a gigabyte p55-ds3p

you sure thats the right name for the board, as P55 is the newer cpu's not socket 755.

Its most likey gonna have a number like 35,38,41,43,45,48 in it. Can u double check for me, as i don't want to get the wrong info for u.

Ok from taking a look at the bios from some reveiw, then setting the System Memory Multiplyer (spd) thing to 2 basicly is the same as using 1:1 so yes either use auto there or 2.

About the timings you can either change the values urself, or let the motherboard do it, for now id say let the motherboard so set the Dram Timing Selectable (spd) option to auto.

Once set to auto, im guessing it will be something like 5,5,5,15 or 5,5,5,18 not sure as don't know ur exact memory.

But don't worry to much about that for now, just set it to auto.

ok put it on auto and 2.00 in the bios got 5-5-5-18 still got row refresh of 52 clocks
is there any were i can read up on all this mem time just as back ground the only things i know that are good is 28-34-44 :-)

That refresh is normal for those timings don't worry for now. Your best bet is to find a stable overclock on your Cpu first, then and only then is it a good idea to mess with memory tweaking.

As memory tweaking can take a lot longer then cpu overclocking. But im glad we have ur timmings a lot lower then before though so thats good.

About links, i'll take a look, don't have any saved atm, maybe others may be able to post some links to info for u.

cheers mate you have been a real help, its people like you that make useing these forums a real pleasure, thanks again think ill stick at 3.2ghz is that a good result from 2.66 as things go?

No problems at all, im not an expert but i do like to help when i can.

You probably can easily get more speed, but then that means messing with vcore, northbride volts and keeping an eye on temps. So read up abit more on ur mobo, try for more if you want, if not you have still boosted ur cpu from what it was, so all is good.

As its been your very first go at overclocking then yeh id say its been a good result, its all about confidence, so contine reading up, and asking questions, im still learning myself.

o yer let me just see what u have to say about this iv just installed to hard drive both 1tb

what partitions would u set on them?

and is it best to full format or quick format them

none are used to boot off

thanks promise ill leave u alone now :-)

I personally do a full format when formating, especially when new, but that can take time especially with big drives.

So neither are boot drives, so storage/backup drives then, it all depends on what u intend to use them for.

If 1 drive is for storage, and the other is a backup drive of that then decide what u want on one and do the same on the other. For example 2 partions on both, but say drive 1 is saved too, and you backup drive 1 onto drive 2 on a regular basis.

For my storage drives i tend to do a minimum of 2 partitions, but i only use a 300gb drive so thats 2 partitions of 150 each.

Best way to think of it is when u come to defrag the bigger the partitions the longer they will take.

Basily this kinda thing there is not set way of doing it, as its down to personal choice really.
