Just upgraded from an 8350 @4.8GHZ to a 4690K with an MSI z97 gaming 3 mobo.

Loaded up the bios and holy cow I have no idea what half this stuff is (Tried youtubing it for my specific board and half of it is named different) I'd like to know what stock settings I should have so it's not all on auto and what to start with.

Safe to say i'm slightly confused, can someone please shed some light on some of these settings?

Best advise I can give you is firstly look around your BIOS and understand where things are located and just understand how your BIOS navigates. I overclocked my CPU about 3-5 months ago for the very first time and I was scared to be honest with you.
What I did was I read manuals (there is one on top of this thread) and made sure i knew when I changed a setting I understood what it was doing. i do recommend you to understand this aspect. If your computer doesn't boot or has a BSOD you need to know why your computer has done this and know how to get back onto your BIOS to go back to the stable setting.
I spent a whole day reading stuff and really getting to know and appreciate my system. I built it together and it's my pride and joy and wanted to make sure I look after it.
Sometimes I think I love it more than my gf, well she is convinced I do haha!

Take your time! There's no rush :). I'm not an expert just and this is why I can't recommend you any settings yet because I'm still learning myself. But those steps above will help you and give you confidence.
Good luck

I took me nearly 18 months to get the courage to OC my 4670K. The motherboard manuals generally don't go into the detail of what the different settings mean. Just to confuse matters, ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI etc use different terms for things. For example, your 'Ring Voltage' is also known as 'Cache Voltage', depending on the board! Google is your friend here.

Just don't rush anything and be patient!

@Borealis Haha well to be clear, If you notice on my signature I have an 2500k so it took me 3 years to grow a pair and overclock. I didn't mean actual manufactured manuals, I was suppose to mean guides on google but there is a really good beginners guide on top of this section.

Trust me to be a literalist!

Yeah, the sticky at the top of this section is a good starting point.

I wish the board manufacturers did include some kind of description. My manual says under CPU Core Voltage Control "This section provides CPU voltage control options." Nothing else at all to explain what VCore, VRing etc mean.
