First time setup of FTTC - Router and Modem both default to same IP address?

Hi,

I'm getting FTTC installed on Tuesday, so I am just doing my background research so that I am as informed as possible as to how to set everything up and to reconfigure my existing hardware.

One thing I have noticed from my research, though, is that both the HG612 modem that is often supplied by the engineers in non-BT/Sky installs (so I won't be getting a all in 1 device such as the HH5 or SR102) and my current router (Asus AC68U) both have a default IP address of 192.168.1.1

It seems that all Asus routers have this as the default IP address, so this must be a fairy common issue and I was wondering which device other users have found it easier to allocate a new IP address to so that there aren't any conflicts?

Thank you, in advance, for any assistance offered :)

LAN1 which is what you use to connect the FTTC modem to the WAN port of your router doesn't really have an IP address so to speak - it's a bridge, so you don't have to change anything. Just set the PPPoE details up in your router.

+1

The modem is literally just that. It doesn't need an IP.

Thank you both very much for your replies. Does this still remain the case if I chose to use a modem with modified firmware to give me access to connection stats, as I may consider doing this for a new connection to make sure that everything is as it should be.

If you want access to connection stats with the modded firmware, you will be using LAN2 on the modem anyway. Your router will likely be unplugged from the modem while you flash the modem and then get the stats.
