Might be showing my age (or geektastic childhood), but it was early 90s... first modem was a 2400bps, used to run a BBS and do quite a lot of that - usenet, fidonet etc. Days and days spent drawing ascii art and having real time chats with friends. Had a 286sx. Before that, RM 8086s that my dad borrowed from his school.
I remember actually having a conversation with a mate, agreeing that email would never take off and was a stupid bloated delayed way of communicating... since anyone you wanted to message was on the BBSs and you could IM them in real-time.
I think my first proper ISP was Compuserve or NetCOM UK, switched to Demon when I got the 14.4, then 28.8, 33.6, finally 56k.
