I start my foundation degree next week in public services.

I have been given my first assignment, but it isnt going to be graded

Title: Self-portrait

Assessed learning outcomes: To determine your ability to

- Study effectively

-Demonstrate the study skills required for the successful competition of the course

- Use ICT skills as appropriate to the course

Assessment 1: Self-portrait (1000 words)

Use a suitable format to provide information on yourself and your educational journey and career aspirations. Include the following:

- Where you come from

- Where you are now

- Where you are going / what do you want to achieve

So is there any advice you can give me, I want mine to stand out and make it look 'pretty' (nice design)

Thanks

Tell the truth, think for your self..

We can say make yourself look super awesome using words, it doesn't work like that.

People that hype themselves too much normally are not the best in their field.

Also I have a suspicion that all this assignment is for is so that when you finish your degree you can look back on what your ambitions were and how they have changed allowing you to see your improvement/realisation of what you really want to do.

The best advice I can give you is do it yourself, I know they say you can ask for help, but asking for help in your first assignment is ridiculous, if you find that hard there's no way you'll be able to do your final assignments.

Let me ask you this? I know everything seems hard when you first get to uni, heck, the first time I went through my books I had to buy a dictionary, but have you tried to study yet or attempted to do it? Have you really sat down and looked at it and thought about it? Or did you just copy the words and pasted them in OcUK? No one can help you in Uni, first of all, that's a form of plagiarism and second of all, what's the point of getting someone to tell you what "stands out and looks pretty", a degree is meant for you to develop yourself and become better at something, otherwise it's just a piece of paper you can give your parents to hang on the wall.

Same above, is there any reason why you have to 'stand out'?

Words are words, if you not worried about them why should you be worried about the design, this is what a degree is for, it makes you used to knocking documents up.

As for structure, nice headings and paragraphing as well as good sentencing and you should be good as gold.

Also a question, Foundation degree as to go on a do a proper degree?

I did a similar assignment for my degree in the first year, was only worth about 10% of the module. Frankly I wouldn't try to be overly fancy and try to stand out and make every sentence look like you swallowed a thesaurus.

It's only a thousand words so just keep it simple, have yourself a title page with your name, date, student number, lecturer name etc and then just have a few simple headings and subheadings (too many would look silly on an assignment so small) and just paragraph it right to avoid a wall of text.

What design? Essays don't have a design or border, or anything for that matter.

By format, I'm pretty sure they mean format of the essay such as introduction and conclusion, not fancy borders or fonts.

What other ICT skills do you imagine you're required to show in writing a self-portrait?

Do they want you to use Photoshop to draw a self-portrait?

I have cracked their code, they want a self-portrait, or '1000 words'.

Going by the rule that a picture speaks 1000 words, just give them a picture of yourself and you win.

Amirite?

AHAHA, please do it, please please pleaaaaaase ..

Picture of self, crop to outline. Wrap text of bio around said outline. Continue with with a tidy layout and standardised formatting, headings.

Don't mess about with body text - Verdana, job done. Consider making headings/footers/quotations more fancy.
