Fitness Trackers

its £200 though. ok if you can use the other functions but if your only looking for a fitness tracker then its a bit steep.

what are the garmin forerunner watches like compared to activity trackers.

Well, I have had a Fitbit Charge HR for 2 weeks now, results seem very consistent and I am getting a lot of good info, especially regarding my sleep.

The Fitbit A.ria scales are good, but I notice that they are sometimes a little out as the scale "locks" the weight too quickly before your weight has fully settled and this can result in maybe a 0.2KG discrepancy. If this happens I simply take my weight again once or twice until I get a consistent result. This doesn't happen often, only occasionally. It's still a great tool though and very convenient.

To complete my technology-based health-awareness trip I have just ordered a Withings wireless blood pressure monitor which I have read good things about, and I am looking forward to tracking that info too on a daily basis and seeing the results over time. http://www.withings.com/uk/en/products/blood-pressure-monitor. Shame Fitbit doesn't do one, but no biggie.

Why am I doing the above, is there any point? Yes, I hit a milestone birthday the other week and I know my lifestyle is not the most conducive to growing old gracefully, so I want to now be aware of my body and try and keep it on track for where I want to be in another 5 years time. The fitness trackers and scales really are so incredibly convenient for tracking your activity and weight over time that I am intending to really keep this into a daily ritual.

Well worth the money imo! :)

Have had a charge Hr for a few days now and has been fantastic for the price, only £69 from the jungle but you have to be patient to wait for the right price.

Now I have the Charge hr my wife has been itching to upgrade. Boots have the Surge for £148, with 10% voucher code HLDY10 makes it £133, Topcashback has tracked it for £11.19. Allows me to upgrade to the Surge for £122 and my wife upgrades to the HR, just need to sell the Flex to offset some of the cost.

I got my Withings blood pressure monitor on Saturday and it appears to work like a charm... blood pressure readings are consistent with my other "non-smart" WHO-approved model and it logs all of the readings to the Withings site with no issues. Seems like a pretty cool device. :)

Sounds like the unit has developed a fault best to get in touch with the retailer where you bought it or Fitbit to get it repaired/replaced under guarantee.

Yeah you are right, will do that tonight. :)

A couple of weeks later and I can happily confirm that my Fitbit Charge HR is very accurate against my Withings blood pressure monitor... they both just measured 66bpm resting heart rate, and the Withings took an average of result of 3 readings.

The Withings is a great device, I like it a lot.

I've been borrowing a mates Fitbit Charge HR for the past week or so, found it kinda interesting and comparing it predominantly against my Moto 360 smartwatch and the google fit step count/exercise logging stuff.

Step wise during activities, and auto-detecting them, seems pretty much identical, usually <100 step difference. But the calorie numbers are hugely different, for the 2.5 mile walk earlier Google Fit says 340 calories, Fitbit says 724. I can't help but think the Google Fit number seems far more sane.

I've found, and now confirmed, that the Moto 360 doesn't like to log steps inside my house for some reason, not sure if it's location, needing the phone to tally up with the watch (it's usually on the desk), or just needing x steps before it begins counting/logging but there's a definite weirdness there. Today for example when I left the house at 14:15 for my walk (I work from home, not just lazy :p) the fitbit was on 2000 ish steps, the watch was on 37.

On that note, whilst the Moto 360 undercounts inside the house, I can't help but thing the Fitbit is overreading a bit, it's not a huge house and 2000 steps between 7am and 14:15 without leaving the house? seems high?

HR is nice and seems accurate, sleep monitoring seems kinda pointless after the initial novelty of seeing how 'restless' I am? and the battery life at around 3 days isn't spectacular. I also find the fitbit isn't entirely comfortable, generally not too bad but nowhere near as comfortable as the Moto 360, or a watch in general.

Overall I'll be handing it back at the weekend, and have no plans to buy one (or any other dedicated fitness tracker) to complement the watch. I have however ordered a Wahoo Tickr heart rate monitor as that should work both with Trainer Road which I've started and also Strava for normal bike rides.

There is absolutely no way a 2.5 mile walk burned 724 calories, unless you weigh 300lbs and your "walk" was breaking the 4 minute mile!

As qucik comparison, my Garmin 610 said I burned about 750 calories on an 85 mile run in 1 hour 9 minutes. The garmin watches are fairly accurate, they use the heart rate data, weight, height and pace and compare well to lab test, but still expect 10-20% errors. the best measurements require monitoring CO2 output because there is a very exact ratio of energy brunt to CO2 released.

The fitbit watches aren't as accurate as the ones that clip on to your waist. when you raise your arms you can get steps counted.

85 mile run in 1 hour? Are you the Flash?

Wow. I couldn't drive 85 miles in 69 minutes... ;)

Just trying a Xiaomi 1S at the moment. (The first one was actually stolen, now I have the extended strap, so it actually fits on my wrist and I can try it)

^ I'd be interested in your views on the 1s - in particular if it provides a RHR. Had my second miband for 6months or so and still awesome.

Re: calories during walking/running, a rough estimate is 100 calories/mile. Anything way off those numbers should make you suspicious.

THose with a Xiaomi Mi Band, any of you use it successfully with MapMyRun?

I got a Misfit Flash after all, around £15. It works fine, though no basis for comparison as it is my first one.
