Hi, i have a hard drive in my old PC which has all my music and photo's etc on. Im just wondering how i would go about of fitting it into my new pc which is sata but the older HD is IDE. The older HD also has a operating system. Will this be a problem? If not how would i go about fitting it?

Ryan

If you have a spare IDE port (or at the minimum a spare connector on the IDE lead) then you can put the hard drive into your new PC. Remember to set the boot order in the bios so that you boot from the SATA hard drive but other than that it should just appear in Windows as normal. :)

Just plug it all in, go into the bios and check to see that the hard disk boot priority is set first for the newer sata hard drive and not the older one.
Load up windows and the job should be done.
It should just appear as another drive in my computer and it won't matter that it has an os on it :)

ok ive just doen that and its picked up fine etc. but now that i try and access documents and settings and then Ryan Crossland (my name and documents) it says access denied! Thats the main folder that i need!. Anyone help?

You need to log on as an administrator level ID and take ownership of the files on the old disk. Should be a case of going through the properties page of the top directory and pushing the ownership down to all the files etc.

Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.

Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

Click Edit, and then do one of the following:

To change the owner to a user or group that is not listed, click Other users and groups and, in Enter the object name to select (examples), type the name of the user or group, and then click OK.

To change the owner to a user or group that is listed, in the Change owner to box, click the new owner.

I,ve pasted the above from Vista's help section.
I'm 99% sure its the same for xp if your using that, try the above and if it does not work just do a search in help and support for "access denied" or "ownership" without the quotes.

Try this and hopefuly your be able to see the security box on folders/files after.

Click Start, and then click My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
3. In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
4. Click OK.
