I'm not surprised so many people knew this but it's one of those things if you've never really seen it then you don't know. Nobody I know does it, and yes it is simple but like a lot of things you just don't think about it at all until someone shows you.
Its fine for all the low power or data cables but be careful with the power cables.
You can fold power cables back and forth but don't then coil the remaining bit round the rest as it makes a form of heating coil and will overheat, may even start a fire if there is enough power being drawn through. Take for instance the one cable that then has a 6 gang socket on the end with a couple of 4 gang sockets plugged into it, it will get very hot if coiled.
