Fixed Penalty Disposals

I'm a bit baffled by these, I thought the accepted wisdom for a closing lane was that you get to the end of it and filter in, rather than stopping and holding up traffic whilst you force yourself into a gap?

Without wanting to start a flame war, it seems like you can be ticketed by any officer who is on the hammer blob on any particular day.

Perhaps I've read them incorrectly or maybe they're just ambiguous to the uninitiated, though.

I suspect that it's down to interpretation.

Hammering it down the outside lane past a queue of traffic and then slamming the indicator and brakes on at the end, is not an example of considerate (or even arguably safe) driving.

Merge in turn causes problems because too many people move over early, leaving a long stretch of lane empty, which others then use as an excuse to fly past the queue as far as possible.

I hope the law is just intended to get people to drive down the outside lane at a more considerate speed, bearing in mind the lane they need to get into is stopped, or barely moving.

I agree it's common, but it's only dangerous, reckless, inconsiderate or impolite if there's someone in the right-hand lane. Otherwise, it's technically a far safer way to tackle a roundabout and something I always do unless there's a vehicle in the right-hand lane.
Absolutely. I was referring to when people do it when there is someone in the right-hand lane. :)

I can't say I ever see a policeman at rush hour so I'm not too concerned with any of this. Yesterday a police car was behind me, a cyclist on the pavement in front of me drops off the curb right in front of me without looking, I have to slam my brakes on, hit the horn, policeman does nothing despite clearly seeing this.

How does that work?

If you haven't forced anyone to take evasive action then in what way might you have "Failed to give way"

I would assume that they're referring to a scenario where someone drives up to a give way junction (with limited visibility) and just flies out onto the main road.

I'm sure that such action could be prosecuted under existing legislation, such as driving without due care and attention. But I would imagine that these scenarios have been clarified, to make it easier to clamp down on people who drive like muppets.

driving too close to the vehicle in front

can this be applied to the cops too? :p seen quite a few doing this, In other threads where I've mention the time I got pulled over "suspicious driving" was due to me turning off the main road and re-joining because the cop was right on my bumper constantly for about 1km and got fed up with it xD

If only these rules were then.... could have said he should issue himself a ticket as I've done nothing wrong and is wasting my time :p

ofc that's not to say I'm completely innocent of it as I'm sure we've all been a bit too close to the car in front for what ever reason :p

I've had two instances in this scenario (both with retired old farts) one of having half a dozen cars literally go bumper to bumper leaving me looking like a tool in lane 2 the saving grace of this situation was a guy in a beemer leaning out of his window and waving me in front of him. The look on the old codgers faces as I carried on over the hatched markings and took up station in front of the beemer (who got a big thumbs up on my way past) was priceless.

Second occurrence where the OAP woman passenger of the car in front got out of the car and hammered on my window after I'd merged yelling "Where are you rushing to? Can't you see the traffic?!" She got a response of "On my way to work, to pay your pension now don't touch my car again please." which was greeted with a face like I'd just pooped on her chips.

haha GG BMW driver :D I try not to get caught in those situations but it does happen and ya do feel like a right fool if you're the only car left in the second lane too... and then everyone else just drives past and consciously makes the effort not to look at you :p

lol at the OAP though, reported for road rage? ;)

I really hope that they also start being more proactive and enforcing traffic lights. The sheer stupidity and amount of red light jumpers now is getting very dangerous and silly. I have been waiting at some lights, my lights have gone green, I have put my car into gear and start to drive away and someone will shoot though the lights with a look on their face of "What?"...

Oh and silly, dangerous u-turns in front of drivers..
And
People that pull out of junctions into traffic/vehicles that are obeying the speed limit but then do not match the same speed causing traffic to slow/stop because of it.

You can get done for "wheel spin"? Does that mean wet roundabout, foot down to make a gap in a V8 fraction of a second wheel spin or McDonalds car park, going round in circles in a Cosworth while wearing a track suit wheel spin?
