Fixing PCs

Absolutely no more. Got fed up in the end of people (even my brother) taking the ****. When it breaks the second time, it always comes back to me as "I was the one last inside it so I must have broke it".

It also extremely irritates me no end when people arrange for me to do anything, not just computers, without actually asking me prior. This is my close second pet hate.

I gave up doing it, people tend to start taking you for granted and eventually there becomes little or no thanks in it.. plus you end up having to support what you do = hassle.

I;ve stopped doing it as well. Two cases spring to mind.

1. Sold my old computer to the gf best mate for a bargain price of £140 7 years ago and I was still going round fixing things for the next 4 years and I have never even being paid for the computer in the first place!

2. My builder used to call me round 3 or 4 times a year. He bills me for his time yet expects me to fix his computer for free? (he is a mate but still. Why can't he build my garage for free?)

When I do a replair, I lay down the law first and make no promises. Not had a single complaint so far and have made quite a few pennies over the years. Trouble is, it is also my job, so I am constantly hassled all day by people with problems with those horrible shuttles. Quite why these were chosen as they work better with Linux and can be a nightmare in Windows I do not know, cost possibly but we have to buy OS' and Office as well. I found some nice machines which came preinstalled windows and office and they were not shuttles. Oh no, we all have to use these nasty little things. Cant even fit a GPU with active cooling in them.

Because they think we 'enjoy' doing it. The only reason I can do it is because I try and fix my own problems, and learn doing it. I hate fixing computers with a passion. See my laptop thread. Sheesh.

fixing pc's is my job :) i work from home aswell with my own business

I drive out and have a look at their pc for a charge of £40 and an extra £30 if i have to bring it home and add/reinstall from my own software.

Not had any complaints yet and business is running rather smoothly :)

I often get stuck with this I only do it for family or friends though. Family is free. Friends is charged in beers.

I don't bother either. Most of the times it's some idiot who knows **** all about computers and thinks it's ok to click on any website link and install any program that confronts them.

I do like to help people with genuine hardware faults or carrying out general maintenance (e.g. cleaning out dust, etc) but I always make it clear to them before hand that there aren't any magical fixes for certain hardware faults and the most I can do is diagnose a problem and tell you what you need to do (e.g. which components to replace).

The other day, someone from school who I hadn't seen in over 2 years decided to land on my doorstep at 8:30AM with his broken laptop asking me to fix it. :(

8:30AM ?? In Summer Holidays?? WTF!?

I would have answered the door with "no I don't want any double glazing" and slammed the door in their face before they can even say a word. :p

I've had a few people phone me up or come round who I hadn't spoken to in years. Neighbours etc. You just know from the second they phone you their looking for something. I never do it for them though, it's just too much hassle. I only fix my mums, dads or grandparents computers, anyone else I just tell them to f off :D.

To fix software, these idiots should learn to use google.

Hardware i'll sort but try to avoid software at all costs.

This. People have a tendency to mess up software even after you fix it for them, then they come to you complaining and blaming you for breaking it.

I've built a few PC's for mates, and will quite happily help with a RAM upgrade or new HDD or something, but I won't get involved with viruses etc.

Anyone other than family or close friends I'll charge money for though, and obviously I'll charge money if I have to order a new component.

Yep - This is very irritating. Family are the worst - My brother and his idiot wife and kids who seem to spend most of their free time screwing up their PC just so they can call me to come an fix it... It's got worse recently with broken XBox's and they have the audacity to go out and buy a laptop now!!... Have told my bro that I will charge for my time, or he can decorate my house for free!!...

my family are not to bad, I have told them to not download anything and not to mess about, its neighbours who are 50+ and dont have a clue, thats the problem.

If anyone wants me to fix their computer I generally charge depending on how long it took, this goes for friends and family too. I frankly have better things to do than to replace the RAM in some crusty old PC coated in smoke residue and dust.
