Fixing PCs

Try this little doozy.

You - "Do you want my opinion as a friend or my professional opinion?"

Them - "As a friend"

You - "Ask a professional."

Them - "What's your professional opinion then?"

You - "That would cost you."

I will be fixing a rather attractive ladies laptop this week and getting a hair cut as payment. She is most pleasing to the eye and I think I will enjoy her running her hands through my hair. Now to decide which hairs to get cut ;)

I had the same problem but now since I said to people I charge £25 an hour (family + specific friends excluded) I get a lot less requests. The requests i do get however are usually virus/spyware problems.

"oooh it never did that when I tried it"

Yes thats because you did not actually do what I asked you to.

Has anyone ever got any of the ones who want a running commentary through everything you are doing whilst stood a foot away from you?

However, much as a pain in the arse as it is there are some rare gems, I mean if they give you the tower and dont expect you do have a good ol look through then they are on another planet. It's always the quiet ones with all the filth I find!

Another classic I just remembered is one of my girlfriends asked me to have a look at ther mum's PC as it was running slow, her mum explained she recently got given it by her brother in law, so as usual I take the PC home to have a look at it.

Sweet lord what did I find? Oh nothing much just several webcam videos of the brother in law au naturel with his 'lad' in his hand!
Of course when she next comes round "I have a little something I would like you to see"....I have never hear screams or shrieking like it in my entire life!

One of lifes golden moments

I loved fixing pcs when I was younger and it was all experience for me but after the 100th time of booting into safe mode and waiting for a virus scan I just started telling people it had to be formatted, much easier and I always got at least 8 cans out of it,

It really annoyed me though when 6 months later someone knocked on my door saying that I broke their pc, I just told them to f off, I got it working, it wouldn't get past the welcome screen before I fixed it, and he said "well it is doing that again and I haven't done anything so it must have been that avast thing you put on it"

I quite enjoy fixing up PC's despite working in IT - so a few jobs here and there I dont mind.

Best one recently was a quick transfer of files from a corrupted Vista install laptop, rebuild from hidden partition and replace files back onto machine. £60.

Worst one a long while back, had a devil machine that I tried lots of things to get the CD burner working to backup stuff but couldnt, then spent a lot longer doing files recovery, then OS reinstall from scratch, patched, AV, data back on, Office install, patch again etc. And due to my naivety, youth and stupidity I only got paid £30.

Ah well, she was hot... and as a bonus I got a copy of her holiday snaps, including her relieving herself in a back alley :p

Yeah, that is really annoying. They think they can understand it if someone tells them once. That's why they need you to do their PC:rolleyes: Also getting asked questions when you're trying to do something is not helpful

I simply don't do it any more. It's not worth the hassle.

Yep, same here. 99% of the time the cause is spyware and/or viruses and I will nearly always find a copy of Norton or similar with an expired subscription and a database years out of date. If they offer to pay I'll do a format and reinstall but my days of cleaning the problem with tools has past, waste of time.

You think you have it bad?

Im a Physio and i can Fix pcs, = double wammy

the number of people my family have randomly committed my time to either fixing them or their pc with no fee "no no its ok, he will do it for free".

sigh*

Well if your into that sort of thing I won't knock it.

My problem is that I'm the only person in my family who knows anything about PC's, well my dad does but he lives in Wales. So I get a constant stream of pointless stupid questions that could be answered by good in 5 seconds.

I'm sure ninety nine out of a hundred problems are attributable to user error. Stupid users can never be fixed. Ie: what they see as a problem is quite often something perfectly normal, like a slow booting pos pc thats eight years old. Or user buying some oem junk with on board graphics, on board sound and wondering why it's struggles with graphically intense games. You cannot fix these users machines because there is no problem.

Im sat infront of a few laptops, and desktops now, they bring them to me, ill sort it here, if not ill go out to them, but id prefer to do it in my own home. and ill deliver them back once done

Get one of these...

I have one of these.. Is this why I've not been getting too many customers :D

As others have said, Family get it for free, and I've prtty much cut out doing it for friends. Theres only one friend left who gets help and thats only because they cook me a lovely dinner and give me plenty of free booze for doing it. Plus they dont seem to call on me any more than once a year.

The one that really gets my goat though is when family who live 100's of miles away ring up and say "I tried to turn my PC on and it does nothing" expecting me to be able to diagnose a HW fault like that over the phone.

They of course know I have a ton of spares and would start with swapping the PSU, etc, but how they expect me to do that over the phone I dont know. I also really dont know if they expect me to say, "Sure, I know its only 8pm, but if I leave right away and drive like a bat out of hell, I could get there for 11?"

I think its because Ive used remote assistance to fix user configuration s/w faults and they think I have my magic remote H/W diagnostics ability to hand.

Take it to the local fix it man tbh...
