I certainly wouldn't go out and replace a 290X with a 780Ti just for Bf4, my money would on a faster CPU to compliment the 290X, especially if he's against using Mantle.

Joking aside, I completely agree.
It wouldn't had been too bad if it was to choose between a 290x at £400 or a GTX780Ti at £500 (granted they are mostly £530+ on average) buying new, but since OP already got the 290x, he would make a loss of up to around £100-£120 on selling it, thus making the "upgrade" to GTX780Ti at a cost of £200-£250Hmmmmm didn't you have a 780Ti and then a 290X?

Is interesting as when running BF4 it shows CPU Cores : Job threads : 3. Should it not be 4 threads?
No, thats normal, i have 6 threads, what i see is "CPU Threads: 6, Job threads: 4"
