Flashed by speed camera

I got flashed when I was wales, didn't realise I had transitioned into a 30mph zone going into Cardiff, so was still doing 40mph....

I never got a letter though, or heard from the car hire company that they had been contacted. Strange.

That is quite common. I think most of them are still on films so could have been empty and others just plain don't work.

I lolled my ass off when my friends were telling me the absolute hysteria about raising limit to 80mph...

Its nice to live here where I can drive at whatever speed I choose any time I like.

Last time I visited UK, I AVERAGED 220kph between Frankfurt and Koln, ahhh, proper freedoms!

You guys need to sort it out.

I just don't get this.
Why speed by such a small amount? After all, if you just keep to the speed limit:
- It's stress free, as you know you never ever have to keep your eyes peeled for cameras
- If you car has cruise control, it's dead easy
- Invariably, you'll get there just as fast, as most of the time, the guy who crawled past you at 35 will be stopped at the next set of traffic lights
- By NOT getting caught as you've made a mistake, you are NOT funding the maintenance of speed cameras. If enough of us kept to the speed limits 95% of the time, they'd soon get pulled, after which we'd be OK to have a spot of "fun" on an occasional basis.

Unfortunately we have a very loud "road safety" and cycling lobby, who bang on to the government constantly. Most people already drive at 80-90 anyway on motorways so I don't see what difference it would make.

Bad luck in any case!

And in British winters, 95% of the time a winter tyre will be worse than a summer tyre with good wet performance... :p

Not when you drive at night 90% of the time and spend half your winter in scotland/north yorkshire it isn't! But I know what you mean.

Too much listening to Fox, not enough real-world experience I fear. I'll take proper winter tyres in winter over good summer tyres in winter any (well most) days of winter.

You are probably correct if you live in Dorset, or Kent, or some other Southern district, but to say that for all of UK is absurd. You do realise that Scotland has 3/5's the landmass of England, despite approximately 1/10th of the population? I would hazard a guess that the roads are less busy, and therefore less treated come winter-time. And so are more treacherous. So good winter tyres are probably more valuable for 30+% of the country.

Yes you have a fair point. I do live about as far south as you can get, so shouldn't be speaking for everyone... Never driven on more northern roads in the depths of winter!

Most of England don't get winters any where near bad enough to need winter tyres. They will just wear quickly without giving any real benefit.

I think the main point to take from here is that everyone has different circumstances and should be applauded for doing the best thing for them. If you are doing the best thing for your circumstances thats great.

If Acme is safest with his decent summer wets that's great. I like my winter wets because its smegging cold when I'm out and about and winter is smegging wet. There are places I would be smegged if I didn't have them too, It's just a no brainer for me. There are times when I don't have the time for things to blow over is better to be equipped and face it. S'much more fun too.

Sure. I was just picking up on the generalisation of weather in Britain, as a whole. Where there is a distinct difference in weather severity throughout the country. So to say 95% of the time they simply aren't necessary in Britain was just wrong. Had he said South of England, then sure.
