Are there any good Flight Simulators for VR?

I'm a bit confused, as I thought VR would be an excellent fit for flight sims and the cockpit experience - but nothing seems to have developed.

There's a few Space Sims (Elite Dangerous being an excellent example) but flight sims just don't seem to be out there.

I've been looking for a gliding/soarer sim, which I accept is pretty niche. But there doesn't seem to be much stuff re flight sims and VR in general.

Am I missing something?

Aerofly FS 2 is supposedly the best performing flight sim atm, and includes a "Schleicher ASG 29 high performance sailplane" in its roster.

There's a very comprehensive review here by a flight sim enthusiast who has a pilots license.

I picked it up yesterday, but haven't had a look at it yet.

I used Google  :)

But it seems to point to lots of add-ons/mods etc. rather than a core flight sim.

I was trying to think of a stand out flight sim that gets discussed on here. Space sims have Elite Dangerous. Racing sims have Project Cars, Assetto Corsa etc. They are all 'cockpit games' which demonstrate VR.

But flight sims are just not mentioned, which seems a shame as VR is perfect for them.

I'll check out Aerofly though.

How much was it in the sale, no immediate for me so can wait for next sale lol, looks interesting.

 all the ones I mentioned, maybe not il2, fall into this category.

fsx, xplane, p3d just need flyinside.
dcs, native
aerofly, native
il2, native

P3D has native support but FlyInside is way better but doesn't support v4 yet
I think IL2 Sturmovik has native VR but not Cliffs Of Dover

I bought Combat Air Patrol 2 in the sale but not had a chance to try it yet

Yeah, make sure you get the right IL2. It's IL2 BATTLE OF STALINGRA or IL2 BATTLE OF MOSCOW you need.

Regardless, get DCS downloaded. It's free and works well. Saying that's it's heavily CPU bound and optimisation always seems to be at the bottom of the list of priorities for the developers so expect to have framerates below 90fps.

The Rift with ASW definitely works better than the Vive at the moment.

That's why I did not say native cause it's poo :D

It's il2 Stalingrad and Moscow versions.

IL2 battle of stalingrad is graphically very impressive in VR. However it's very light on content, there are hardly any planes to fly and the interface on it is crap. I also get FPS drops on my i7-7700k/GTX 1080 system.

Native VR support for IL2 Cliffs of Dover is coming now its been ported to the new engine but still a while off.

I have AeroFly FS2 on Steam, the VR implementation was OK, I expected more which is why I have only played once or twice, quite glitchy too.

I love AeroFly FS2, It really feels like you are in the plane. I have had some amazing moments buzzing around places I have visited in real life. The US scenery is top notch, take off from Grand Canyon Village and fly north over the Rim edge. Amazing feeling.

Aerofly FS2 seems to be the one to go for then. A wide selection of planes (including a Schleicher glider!) and good support for VR.

Thanks for the recommendations!

As already mentioned, go checkout DCS.
Might not have the best scenery, and doesn't do civil aviation. Does however have brilliant physics, many fully clickable cockpits and IMO the best VR experience I've yet come across. Note, that I also fly Elite and IL2.

War Thunder is a bit more arcady, but expect a grind-fest to get new planes. It runs fantastically well though, and looks great. The UI is awful in VR - it's kind of like having a menu the size of a giant Imax screen. Expect lots of neck issues. It's free, so give it a try.

DCS looks good, at least in terms of the planes. Ground detail is not great, and I got horrible FPS drops for daring to look out the sides of the cockpit.

IL-2 gets my recommendation - the devs have tried to optimize it for VR with dynamic resolution and other visual options. A small bit of tweaking and it runs very well indeed.
