Flint 4 - Discussion Thread

I got my power meter out on the flint 4 today some rough numbers here:

With all 2.5gb ports used, 3 separate wifis- 2.4, 5, 6ghz.

Idle: 12.8watts

Using wifi maxed out: 15-16watts

Using network 1 PC maxed out: 13.5watts

With 1 Samsung 256gb flash installed/used 14watts

Its not bad, obviously a router with one of the top end performing CPU and wifi 7 wasn't going to be your bog standard 7-9 watts like my old old Asus AC86 router was,
this one is basically double the power but you also got 2-3x more performance. You maybe able to save some wattage if you did not use USB flash/HDD storage and went
more wired set up and perhaps switch to the 1gb ports on the far end rather than using 2.5gb ports (not testing that but should be)

Have you done any network SMB read/write speed tests to the drive?

Yes, some basic test, with samba share enabled:

Samsung usb 3.2 fit 256gb drive and an 5gig video file, 100MB/s roughly during write and around 180MB/s on read.

USB 4 enclosure with nvme 256 gen 4 drive and 5gig video, 100MB/s roughly during write and around 180MB/s on read.

To me that is a bit slow, maybe I have a network/PC issue or its just the flint4 not sure. But I am using cat 7 ethernet cabling around the home and mini pc is running off 2.5gb ethernet.

I did notice the wattage did peak to 17-18 watts with both USB storage drives connected (flash and nvme drive) during file transfer usage.

I wonder if it's limited on purpose to stop it robbing all the resources away from networking that would bottleneck or drop out the connection?

Possible, I have asked around the internet but until someone plugs it an usb drive/storage and test its read/write speeds can't verifiy.

Its possible its a bottle neck or issue my side, but I believe I have done as much as I can. Even switched off VPN and tried on 2nd mini pc with 2.5gb port also with same speeds.

There should be plenty enough cpu power and memory to hit faster speeds given how powerful the router is, I will try and find the discord flint group and ask over on there also.

I'm going to stick to the stock firmware for the time being. The beta release looks good and I don't see the point in switching just yet. I'll keep my eye on things though.

I just hit the update button, does appear to have fixed things with the ports, wifi stability and other things and seems stable but sure when things are running solid and you don't want to hear the complaints of downtime I get it :)

I got it wrong with the my samba poor speeds issue above, just did some research and spec checking the flint 4 only has USB 3.0 speeds both on the C/A ports, so what I am getting with 160-200 MB/s read/write data transfer speeds across a 2.5g wired network is correct for USB 3.0.

They couldn't have just used USB 3.2 gen 1 port? Its 10 years old and would have given at least 300-400 MB/s read/write speeds! Anyhow its not a biggy and still fast enough even for 4k streaming, I have suggested to flint support to add it on next one.

Price has dropped
£297 so 10% lower now
Still seems no fcc approval in usa
So probably won't be picking one up here
Where it would have been cheaper than the uk

I see the price on main gli site for £330.99, I don't feel its worth that price tag. Not when early bird offers were roughly £230ish. Id wait a few weeks or months, see with Ali express deals and stack coupons, 10-20% top cash backs and paypal discount payment options and hopefully its back to where it belongs around £230-250ish. They may also need to drop prices since Asus wifi 8 routers are inbound.

Yeah was hoping to pick it up in usa
Would have worked out around 220 area
But only flint 2 and 3 have fcc approval sadly
Didn't think about top cashback
Will have to see if its on there
Only got another week in Vegas so it's unlikely to get fcc approved in that time

Not too worried about wifi 8
Wifi 7 where mlo is fully working
Will do me fine
But can wait for price drops
Not something I must have immediately

Thanks for the update on that, still a lot faster than some off the shelf routers as some struggle to supply enough current to the socket.

I can't see that happening with the Flints 4amp supply. :)

Thanks, was not aware of that. Firmware betas are here if anyone is interested, you can download the beta file and log into flint4, system>upgrade>firmware local upgrade and drop the file in there and it will auto update.

So far seems stable and ok, but my usb flash drive was not recognized and acting funny and empty, so I logged into flint>apps>network storage and ejected the drive and manually removed the usb flash from flint 4 and than rebooted it and reinserted flash and its now behaving normal and working ok.

New firmware beta has DNS section with DNS split options, not played around with it but VPN and internet working fine for now, if there are any weird stuff ill update here.
