Just wondering if anyone here lives next to a river and is concerned at the moment?

Mainly north west related but I live next to the Irwell just after a confluence of 2 rivers.

The river is currently at the highest level anyone around here has seen and the highest in over a decade.

It shows no sign of slowing and rose about 3 feet in the last few hours, ended up coming home early when I got the text from the environment agency.

Just uploading a video now.

I made sure I got an apartment on the third floor so material wise I'll be fine, just need to make sure I keep an eye out if I need to move the car :)

Probably doesn't look like it's about to burst the bank, but it's usually 4 meters lower, and now there's probably about 1 meter from the path to the river so got a bit of a window but the ground can't hold any more water around here, so any rain and groundwater flow will simply be filling the river up more and more.

Sat here in Rochdale looking out the window at the river Roch that's very close to overflowing and flooding the college and ASDA store near it.

Edit: Its already level with some of the college car park and half of it is beginning to get a little flooded.

Heard it's pretty bad up there! More rain forecast for tomorrow as well I hear.

The road leading down to the river was itself a river this evening, the entire valley side is saturated, not that all the built up areas help.

The rain here in the SW was mental yesterday. I really regretted taking the M5 home, it wasn't fun at all. Not often I need the wipers on full speed! Luckily the rain moved on in the night. Best of luck to you :)

Keep us updated with minute by minute pics and some videos if it does start to flood :p I love seeing it happen

Hehe, you and me both! Downside is it's now dark and everyone knows natural disasters always happen at night!

I'll be getting up early to check out the river level, we're expecting heavy rain till about 3am.

Could be a good marketing idea that, release hundreds of OcUK mugs into the river, take video of them, post on youtube, profit.

I live in Calderdale and I'm literally right next to the ****ing river, it burst its banks about a couple of hours ago. My flat takes up the first and second floors of this building, thank god. Looking out onto the main road through my front room window, I'm watching abandoned police cars slowly drift down the road as the sheer force of water washes them down the street. Even at the sides of the road, the few people still insane enough to be out there are wading around in fast-moving water that's way higher than waist level. No idea what's possessing them to be out there unless they're very determined to get back to their families.

They are apparently using police boats to try to reach people now.

It's actually pretty impressive in a force-of-mother-nature way, but worrying in another way as the rain does not seem to be showing signs of stopping.

Why isn't this on the news?

It kind of is

"BBC reporter Dan Johnson speaking from Mytholmroyd said the River Calder had burst into the town centre and businesses and homes have been flooded.

He said there was 2ft (0.6m) of water in the main street and the fire service was using inflatable boats."

^^ Only thing I'd add is that was reported at about 9pm. We've had a lot more rainfall since then and things are now somewhat worse.

I was just expecting it to be headline news you know, not many times where you will see cars drifting away down the street.
I mean if I saw it in my street I would make a thread!

Apparently the road is flooded a mile or so from my house. Luckily we live fairly high up the valley so there's no chance of our house getting flooded.

It's raining so hard that our roof was leaking into my bedroom. I knew there was a problem there as I saw a damp patch a year or so ago, but it was literally pouring in through the ceiling and down the wall. I have only just decorated and laid laminate flooring as well . Hope this is covered under house insurance.

Those that live on the 2nd or 3rd floor... Without wanting to panic you, are you safe or can the sinks and loo overflow from the sewer?

I could be completely wrong, just wondered.
