Flooded engine - how much trouble am I in?

then we can have a bit of spec me a replacement car fun.

Wow. In that example would you be able to claim off the council instead of your own insurance?

Wouldn't be council, if the damage to the road was caused by the water main then it's the water companies responsibility and claim would go against the water co's public liability insurance however I would imagine it would still be up to your insurance co to claim against it rather than you.

Right, the insurers have picked up the car, and we've picked up our hire car - crummy Chevy Spark again, but at least it's a car.

I'll post back when the insurers get back to us, and we get to bickering over the payout, and then we can have a bit of spec me a replacement car fun.

I turned my nose up when my garage offered me a renault scenic as a courtesy car and he said the following

"A second class carriage is better than a first class walk"

Struck me as true.... no matter how bad that car is!

The car is through the insurance. We had only just renewed a few weeks back and we ummed and ahhed about paying the £30 for the guaranteed hire car. I'm very glad we did now! As it goes, I noticed that the tax disc on the hire car was out of date on Friday, so we called them and they said to bring it on Saturday morning and they gave us a free upgrade, so we've now got a brand new Polo, which is much nicer. A Polo is actually on my short list of possible replacements in the event of a write off, so it's good to get some experience with one.

Also on the short list is my mother in law's Yaris, which she's looking to get off her hands imminently as she's buying a new car. We went out in that a bit yesterday. It's ok, but the ride isn't great. Still, it would be cheap with low miles and full Toyota service history and the proverbial one careful lady owner. Well, we'll see.

Update - Had a call from the insurer's garage to say that they've concluded that the engine is not economically repairable. They're getting an "engineer" in tomorrow or Thursday, who will decide what happens next, presumably whether replacement is a viable option, or whether it's a write off.

Nope, exhaust was right. OP says earlier that his intake was way above the water level and that he changed down to 1st in the middle of the puddle. As some people have already said, changing gear can change the pressures within the exhaust (which was under water) causing it to suck inwards.

I think it highly highly unlikely you could get water going from the tailpipe right up to the engine (up through the manifold!) when the engine is running. All the hydrolocked engines ive seen are when water enters through the air intake. How on earth does an exhaust suck inward?

What I read was that if you change gear while in the water - which I did - then the varying pressures in the manifold can pull water in from the exhaust.

It all depends how far underwater the exhaust gets, if the engine isn't creating enough gas, it can't displace the water, meaning you increase the exhausts backpressure, the engine will stall, doubtfull you will suck up water all the way to the block, but again it depends how much water you've got yourself into.

Right. I've had a call from the insurance this morning. They are writing the car off, and have offered me £4,400 for it. I'm going to do some checks on Auto Trader and whatnot, but that sounds like about what I was hoping for.

For the curious, it was a 56 plate Ford Focus Zetec with climate pack and 1.6l engine and 37,500 on the clock.

Oh buoy, what a palava! Still, at least the insurance company isn't being difficult, so that's one less thing to worry aboat.

People always say never accept their first offer. Try and go for nearer 5k

Aye. I was expecting them to open at £3.5k and for me to have to push them up to £4.5k. If they're going to open at £4.4k then I'm definitely going to try to push them up.

Just find a few examples of the most expensive car that matches yours to the T.

Too many miles? Ignore
Not enough history? Ignore
Wrong trim? Ignore

when I went thru my insurance claim they wee comparing it to a car with far more miles, wrong size engine, car with no history.

Not as plain sailing as some may think, then again we don't all use our cars as boats :p ;)

6 year old thread. But relevant.

06 civic. Drove through a flood and engine stalled on way out.

Tried to start the engine over the course of 50mins.

On the 7th or 8th go the car started. Very hesitantly.

Felt a bit jumpy whilst accelerating, but seems fine now.

Checked the dip stick, pulled it out and looked a bit milky around the stick, wiped it and checked several times for rest of day, including taking the oil cap off, no sign of milky fluid again.

Oil just looks like oil.

Engine isn't making any noises, so am I good?

Anything else to check?

I wonder if the water went into the exhaust. There was a lot of steam once the engine started.

Sounds like it, ide do a fluid change ( oil & brake/clutch fluid ) just for peace of mind but as it's not making any expensive mechanical noises ide say you've more than likely got away with it.
