My first macro shots of the year - just really testing gear and technique

These were taken using a Canon 20D, Macro Ring Flash, Canon 100mm Macro lens and extenders - Approx 2x life size. EXIF info embedded.

Were 1 and 3 frozen with an upside down air duster?

Really want to get a macro lens. Thanks for sharing!

Detail is missing from 1 and 3 becasue they're overblown or PP poorly but No 2 is excellent although I'm guessing thats a HUGE fly, in fact - more like The Fly
They are all 2x life size (including photo 2) so very tiny insects !!

The 3rd photo shows some spec flash highlights but the first doesn't have anything blown out - It is actually a white body.

2x life size, surely that means if you half the image sizes then they'll be life size?

If so they are HUGE.

Although I think I'm just being thick...my brain melted when I started on my uni assignment. :(

LOL :)

2x life size compared to the image projected onto the film plane - full fame sensor.

e.g.
If you photograph an insect that is 2 centimeters long at 1:1 (lifesize), it will take up 2 centimeters of space on the sensor. 2x means it'll take up 4cm on the sensor - so a closer view :)

For reference - this a shot of a £1 coin at 2x life size.
Most of this detail can't even be seen with the eye.

1x life size - Standard 1:1 Macro lens

This is the actual size of the fly in photo 1

Actual size of a pound coin - place one on the screen and you'll see :)

:: EDIT ::
A slight problem with this theory :o
Depends what screen res you use - The images in this post were set to real size using a res of 1280x960

Anyway, hopefully you understand scale comparison now :)

Excellent shots btw,

I got some macro filters which you screw on the lens a few days ago and unfortunately, they have a very shallow DOF making it difficult to take shots.

Also seems to mess up the AF system as well.

I can recommend the Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, which I use on my Nikon D80. Gets better reviews than the Nikon equivalent, and costs a lot less as well!
