Focus or Golf?

.......a 1.8T golf and get it mapped and it will put more of a grin on your face than any focus ever will.

More of a grin than ANY Focus EVER will?

What about a tuned Focus RS or ST? Does a remapped 1.8T Golf suddenly become a Ferrari killer or something?

But is a tuned RS or ST going to come into the price range the op stated? No they don't become a ferarri killer but they do become a same priced focus killer :p

Go for the Focus!

I had one and my brother got the golf, guess what he ended up selling his golf for? ;) .... yep a focus!

Then my other brother got one!

Great cars, had it for three years completely problem free and my uncle has had his for 7 years from new and never had any problems!!

Sold her now though, for a nice Audi TT!

Focus

I get over 40mpg driving to work (20 mile run, 1.6 engine)
they're cheap as chips to run and service. The interior of the golf is nicer built, but the handling and plain styling dont do it for me, plus the golf is too expensive for what you get.

The best bet is to have a look around in your area for cars that are for sale and take both a Golf and Focus for a test drive and make your own mind up.

As has been said the Focus handles better although the Golf is far from bad, Golf has a better built interior although not as funky looking. External Looks are down to the beholder although both to me in non Anni/ST170/R32/RS guise are a little bland. I would say a well looked after example of either would be reliable.

Couldn't agree more... make your own mind up as after driving both it will become apparent what you want

get the focus, I had a tdci sport and loved it so much I now have an ST :D :D

yes the golf is more refined inside (some would say sombre) but you're likely to end up with a pauper spec golf on the same year as a fairly well specced focus, I have a focus, had an old focus, my sister in law and mother in law have older shape focuses and my father in law has a new shape diesel and iirc none of us have had anything go wrong with them.

Ever. Thats pretty much over the space of the last 4 years and both me and the father in law do some silly mileage.

Also for the older shape you can buy a thingy that plugs into the changer port on the back of the stereo and comes out to a 3.5mm jack so you can plum your ipod/whatever straight in and use the steering column volume controls.

It'll also be cheaper to insure, just be careful you get the right model though as my tdci sport was a pig to sell.

A zetec or ghia or whatever would be easy peasy.

I'd say the focus drives better and is cheaper (ive driven both), so if it's down to money then choose the focus.

Although it depends what you want, as I chose my Golf 1.6 SE 8V as it looks much better than a Focus, has a much nicer interior and is a 'nicer' first car for a 17yo.

You considered a TDCi focus? I love driving mine, its quicker than most of the petrol Foci, handles well and I get great fuel economy. At the low end I get 45ish MPG but most of the time I get a lot more!

The only problem is it sounds like a tractor.. :D

I sat in my mates Golf 1.8 GTi and didn't like it compared to my 1.6 Focus. He kept harping on about how he wanted to get a "more mature car" then went and got a GTi with a dump valve and bloody great alloys. How much more boy racer can you get? :P

That said, I like my comfort when in cars, hence why I prefer the Focus.

Hehe very true, I was just trying to point out that the term 'golf' was being used a bit loosely as not all Golfs are lardy, as already pointed out by Wayn0r's r32.

Technically speaking Wayn0r's R32 is the most lardy of all golfs. It just has sufficient power to remove this as an issue.
