have a thing for one of these been looking around for a good used example.

have a good daily but just fancy owning one, what to look out for and tips would be very welcoming.

Check it's had all the common St faults rectified.
MPG is laughable, you'll struggle to top 30MPG on a long run, expect sub 20's in town or if using the loud pedal a lot.

just fancy a blast on the weekend type of thing. mpg yes have heard but petrol's usually do i guess.

I had one for about 5 years and had no issues with it. I think it was on 70k ish miles when I sold it.

But yea, cracked cylinder liners can be a thing. If it's tuned it will likely clutch slip a bit unless that has been upgraded too.

MPG around 30, so not really a daily car for the times. Weirdly you can reach the official mpg figure if you drive carefully.

I’ve had mine for 4 years, and apart from both drive shafts and an alternator it’s been faultless.
Fuel economy is utterly terrible, but you don’t buy an ST for economy.
If you plan on upping the power then doing the block mod, RS clutch, induction kit, intercooler (the std IC is from a focus diesel) and a new boost solenoid is a very good idea.
Mine is 300bhp ish and is much more fun than std, I just sob like a child when I look at the Mpg.
If you go to look at a few then take someone knowledgeable with you as there’s some absolute snotters up for sale.

Would be looking for one that has had the mods done. And yes a bit more power.

Bye ek they shift

I loved mine, ran it for 90K miles (the fuel bill worked out to be about the same as a house deposit though!) and sold it when the driveshafts had given up and various mounts and hoses were on their way out.

300HP is easily achievable, and I ran Collins CP320 for probably the best part of 75K miles without a block mod without any issues. The clutch was replaced 40K miles after the map was added, but it was slipping for a lot longer than I realised as the power increase was noticeable after just changing the clutch.

By now they'll have had all the original common faults fixed, but they'll all be getting leggy as even the youngest one is going to be 13 years old at this point. So budget for a complete hose refresh, and a suspension refresh if it hasn't been modified already. Powerflex bushes are cheap enough, and a Bilstein B12 kit will replace the aging shocks and springs.

Nothing quite comes close for the money that would give that noise, it's the only thing I miss about mine!

FWIW when I was looking for a car around that age I disregarded the St due to running cost and ended up with a Mk. 3 Focus Ecoboost 182 but that's hardly special enough for a weekend car.

What are these like in regards to rust? I'm looking at getting one soon but don't want to mess about with panels rusting to bits

The body is fully galvanized. But they can get rust spots at the corner of the rear arches where the bumper on some of them rubs the paint away.

Loved mine, only sold it as my commute went up hugely. Irony being I left the job after 7 months and should have kept it.

Worth it for the noise alone, I'd definitely scratch the itch.

The only issue I had was the rear bumper rubbing the paint away, got that sorted. Oh and rather weirdly had 3 wheel bearings fail almost at the same time.

I had one, great car, 2009 5 door in blue with nav screen, dual zone climate, sunroof, heated seats etc (ST-3)

I owned one around 8 years ago but sold it for something more economical at the time. Regretted selling it immediately :(

I then changed departments in work and was given a company car so I sold my car and purchased another ST purely for weekend fun.

It's currently Stage 1 with a few subtle mods and just hit 70k miles. I only do around 600 miles a year. The sound from the 5 pot is fantastic!

As others have said, fuel economy is terrible, and it's worthwhile checking if the block mod has been done.
