Apart from the obvious 170bhp... what kind of performance do these have? Just had an uphill standstill roll away from lights tussle with one, and then round up a slight incline for a while - and well when we got to the lights where we stopped he rolled down his window and said "I thought it's just a Sport!? What have you got under there?" "urm... just the 2ltr" "well it shifts mate, couldn't keep up" me: ":D"
So am I missing something here, or was my car not meant to be a fair bit slower? :D hehe

sadly the st170 isnt that fast, however, he shouldnt have had any trouble with your scooby sport imo...

He couldn't drive or his car was broken :).

Edit: Not that there's anything wrong with Scooby Sport but the ST170 is ~40bhp up on it, presumably lighter and with much lower transmission losses due to the FWD layout.

to be fair, I did find the st170 needed some serious trashing to get going well, I was going well up the rev range to keep it moving at a good pace, you scoob probably doesnt need quite as much go, so, if he didnt go mental from the start, he probably didnt have the umpf to catch, esp if he shifted up at 5.5k or something

Very true, you have to keep the engine on the boil all the time otherwise someone in a much less powerfull car can catch you out.

to be fair, the ST170 is always incorrectly compared. people see that and think, ooh Civic Type R, Clio 182, Cooper S etc.. in reality, its probably closer to a Civic Type S, Mini Cooper, Ibiza Sport etc... still a good car imo tho :)

I reckon his gear changing was all wrong, especially if it was uphill and you know how to get the most from the Impreza.

well it was bone dry, and I didn't even know he was there until he accelerated. I didn't launch or anything, pulled away normally, then when I saw him next to me booted it and pulled past him and kept doing so.

Pulled past? lol Sorry but he couldnt drive or the car was broke :) Not the quickest in the world but quicker than a sport.

Come on guys, a 4wd will out accelerate a fwd UPHILL as most of the power cannot be put down on a fwd as the weight transfers to the rear, so the front end will loose traction earlier.
In a 4wd the weight also transfers but as the rear wheels are powered the full output can be put down.
That difference could be worth 30-40hp or more.

I don't think the Focus was wheel spinning all the way up the hill.

No he probably wasn't, but then that would point to the fact he was not TRYING to put all his power down, because if he had done so, he most likely would have been wheel spinning all the way up.

But it was dry and the focus has 170bhp, hardly 400bhp's worth of omg don't floor it, i doubt the fact this took place on a hill made little differance, the simple fact is the focus is quicker than the sport, the ST was either broken or had a muppet behind the wheel or the story is not as told.

the story is as told, I'm sorry but I'm not one to make these kind of things up. I just found it funny when he said what he did, hence posting it, not to try and say that ZOMG my car is fast - because I know it isn't. I know a ST170 is MEANT to be faster.

ScoobyDoo: your obviously some kind of driving legend, there is no other logical explanation.

On a similar note I got done off the lights by my gf in her 1.4 Polo with 15BHP less than my car. I suck :(

ROFL, sorry, but just no.

Even if it was wet, I doubt the Focus would have been wheel spinning.
