Folding Farm

Lanz, you do know there is also a folding style client that calculates the effects of global warming? Either thats incredibly ironic, or PCs don't use up as much electricity as you think ;)

Plus you could say that about any super computer setup. During the making of Shrek 2, it took an entire room full of computers a few days to render each scene. Now I don't know about you, but I would consider medical research a lot more important than entertainment, and I don't see anyone complaining about our green ogre friend.

Medical research? What's a more worthy cause?

Just give the money you save each year in electricity to medical research, I'm pretty sure hard cash given to proper researchers would be more beneficial than chucking out all that carbon.

PCs do use a lot of electricity, probably about 150-200w for your average folding machine under load, multiply that with a farm and you're spunking a lot of cash that you could just give to cancer research (or something) whilst saving the enviroment.

Entertainment is different, its a worthy use of electricity, having 10 PCs on in your garage 24/7 is stupid.

Ok seems like I have sparked off some nerves, so here goes:

1: We pay for electricity in a fixed some each month, so whether these PCs run or not my bill will be the same so I might as well.

2: Different team, my own.

3: Sell the parts. Name me someone who has need of the PCs I have mentioned in order to do something with them other than folding and I will gladly do it.

I fail to see how me leaving on a few PCs that would otherwise be thrown away is more of a waste than someone who plays games for eight hours a day with their crossfire/SLI setup. His/Her gaming benefits no one at all. This has the potential to help people.

Don't worry, you always get people popping out of the woodwork when these threads crop up.

My personal view is that anything less than about 1.5GHz (ULV Core (2) Duos excepted) isn't worth touching unless that PC is doing something else useful (e.g. server). These days, the energy consumption just isn't worth it (whether you pay or not).

Sell it all and get a E6300?

Use less power, do more work.

Waste of power/money IMO.

Pretty much the best reply so far [and you zerker :D]

Yes fair enough you're putting those PCs to good use, but they will be using a lot of power for very little gain. Stanford prefers their results back within days, not weeks.

So, flogging/giving away all those old PCs and investing in a Core 2 Duo or other high end rig will not only save a shed load of leccy [doesn't matter if you pay a fixed amount or not - more leccy is being used nonetheless] but you will also be benefiting the science much more with a huge increase in turn around time.

I tried asking people to send me their stuff for me to run FOR THEM (free 'leccy see) and they still didn't want to, so I wouldn't bother tbh.

He's not offering to run people's PCs for them. He wants us to send him spare parts so he can build a folding farm for his own personal folding team.

Everyone else is trying to convince him to not bother with slow arse rigs and get a C2D or some other high end CPU.

@Beansprout - Zefan at uni with electric inc in halls bill.
@Zefan - most of us only have one or two home rigs, that we need for stuff. rest of farms are either work / school or friend borgs.

@Shiz - There's plenty of charities that will take P3 machines. If giving a load you may get some cash back (but that's not really charity then)

I made a thread ... hang on I'll dig it up.

More or less I get free 'leccy at uni Clicky
Yes, but if you can't see that:

a) Asking for whole machines is different to asking for spare parts
b) You don't have unlimited electricity
c) Hence there's no reason to get hissy about it

Then I do worry a little and get bemused, hence the

:)

I do know, which is why I'm not still plugging away trying.

I do actually

I didn't , I was merely commenting on the fact that he's not going to get stuff for free.

Cool, "I wouldn't bother tbh." just sounded a bit hissy to me :)

I do actually
No you don't. You'd overload the circuit, depending on how decent/generous your electricity setup is.

I wouldn't guarantee it is unlimited Zefan. If your uni doesn't like the look of unusually large electricity bills they will investigate. I would be surprised if they didn't have something in your contract that says the leccy is paid for but it's subject to some kind of reasonable use policy.

I know if I offered flat-rate leccy bills I would want to know about 20 PCs on 24/7 :D

No offense intended, but.. I doubt anyone is going to give you decent parts if you intend to fold for your own team. People tend to be pretty generous with their old stuff, but usually on the assumption that the points will stay within OcUK!

For the purpose in discussion, I might as well have.
Indeed. Beansprout - that's a bit pedantic no?

OP, I don't think you'll have much luck unfortunately. A worthy cause if you feel it's worth the disproportionate energy use for the amount of points you can get out of these old machines. However, as this is the OcUK team section, if there are any parts which aren't worth enough to sell on the MM, they will likely go in the "Spare Parts Sticky" and get picked up by a team mate, or get scrapped.

Good luck with the farm :)
