Folding@Home News 10th - 17th November

Yes in the other thread about increasing the core count for bigadv.

For Opteron its going to be either just on, just under or just over depending where you shop around for parts.

Even from the Sca(m)-iest place online its

2 x 6128 = £423
1 x G34 dual socket mobo = £416
32 GB Ram = £178
Total incl vat = £1017

Cheers for the info - may look into this as a personal Xmas pressie.....

Which memory were you quoting?

Which memory were you quoting?

Halved the RAM :) So its sub 1K

It was CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 - 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair DDR3 XMS3, PC3-12800 (1600), Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24, XMP, 1.65V

You would not need 32gb for a 2p system 16gb would make quad channel with 2gb sticks so you could half the price on ram:)

I would go for any good ddr3 1600 like this:cool:

Good catch, mind in quad world, couldn't wrap itself around the Dually mentality :)

Not sure i will catch ya Biffa she will not just be folding but folding is probably as much stress as you can give a rig so she is for a week or so just to make sure all is good:)

Also trying to find out from the [H] how to overclock stock G34 opterons on an SM board ,i will let you know on this one:eek:

Biffa what sort of ppd does your SR-2 pull down on a 6903?

I put Andromeda together for about £1080 but i reused a psu and rack i already had.

ebay on the cpu's and mobo? Or just the cpu's?

I had a look for the above spec but ebay even from the US just wasn't any better than retail currently. Guess its just luck of the draw if you catch some good cheap ones. But with Interlagos not looking that great I think more ppl will hang on to the MagnyCours for a while keeping prices high :(

Let us know about the FSB overclocking, I had some private messages from tear and he was going to email me the info but I never got it.

Motherboard was new from a place in Germany £530 delivered:eek:

CPU's from a guy in the US but from a forum not ebay:)

Looks like she might be able to match the SR-2 when fine tuned:D

Tried the core hack on my 2700K but seem to just be getting 6901s :(
Though I didn't realise just how important RAM is to big-adv. My memory runs at 2000mhz 9-9-9-24, but at 1.65v, to keep in close to intel's sandy bridge specs I was running it at 1600mhz 1.55v, playing around trying to get better TPFs, I then ran it at 2133mhz 10-10-10-30 1.6v and lobbed off a whopping 50secs off the TPF, makes me wonder what I could get on my 980x at 2000mhz, it's currently at 1600mhz.

I've struggled to get big betas on my core hacked 2700ks for the last few days, I've just picked up 2 P6903s now though. Obvious suggestions but things that caught me out - enough memory and cores set on the virtual machine? Is it showing as detecting 12 cores?

I really need to have a look at my memory actually, I think I did the same of setting it to 1.5.

Awww Crap.......

Looks like dekez has upped his game and hanluc is doing the same.

My ppd has dropped to 85k.........

Really need a boost in performance to have any kind of chance - and it doesn't help when my last BigBigAdv upload didn't get it's bonus points :(

And things won't get any better in the new year with the BigAdv restrictions :( :(

So what happened bob?, did you miss the deadline? I see from your stats it was the 990x

My PPD is looking good :p, but unfortunately my 2700k isn't fooling anyone, it's just picked up another 6901, third in succession. I'm running Ubuntu natively, dual boot, 12 cores are detected, and I have 4 gigs of RAM, both my hex cores finished 6904s in the last few hours, and then picked up 6904s again, so the odds of me just being unlucky are diminishing.

No idea what happened - had nearly 2 days till deadline (I think)..........

Guess I must have been mistaken - got another on the way so see how this one holds up.......

Looks like with you two hex cores & 2700k you'll soon be passing me........unless......

If I get time tomorrow I may build Hades replacement......you may have noticed in my stat's that Hades is no more.......the i7 860 has been demoted to Apollo - to be replaced by a 2600k :D

Also, upgrading memory on both 2600k's from 1600MHz to 2133MHz - need to squeeze...........squeeze..........SQUEEZE!!!!!

But I will only keep the 860 till Xmas as I 've found it a good home - at which point I may consider building Cronus......Dual Socket (SR-3) or possibly Quad (G34)

Sounds a bit low......

I'm getting 23k PPD on my i7 860 @ 4GHz - think I got close to 38k on my i7 920 (before upgrading it) but I think it was @ 4.2GHz and running Linux (Virtual Image).

Click link (in sig) for what my riggings are running at.

Interesting. I just checked through my previous WU history, and I've had up to around 23k on normal SMP, so I'm not sure why my ppd on bigadv isn't really any better.
I've gone back to normal SMP, no point doing bigadv for very similar points output.
If I didn't have 24GB of RAM I could clock my i7 higher and it might then be worthwhile, but above 4GHz the temperatures go through the roof with the voltage increases I have to make to keep it stable with all the banks filled.

Check your memory, to get bigadv you need to have at least 2GB free for standard ones and 2.8GB free for the 6903/6904

I have a feeling this is why I'm struggling to get 6903/4s

Can 2600/2700K users, confirm what Ubuntu says from the command " free -mt " ?
When my system is idle it says I have only a 1 gig free out of 4, when running big-adv it says 63 meg free, but "top" says FahCore_a5.exe is only using 27% of the memory, which would be the 1gig, so where's the other 3 gigs going?

EDIT
I've rebooted and this seems to have cleared the memory, I've lots free now, I'll be keeping an eye on it.

UPDATE
still not right, I've stopped the fah client, and it's showing I'm using 1.5 rigs of RAM, this is idle, so I only have 2.5 free, not enough. Loudbob, what RAM have you ordered?

Its because you are folding on windows, you will get a *25-40% performance boost by folding on Linux for bigadv. *depending on your kit.

Shave 10% of those figures if you use a virtual machine. (Vmware/VirtualBox)

Ah, of course, I forgot bigadv was so much better on Linux.
I didn't know that folding in a VM still helped out though, I might give that a go for the last 5-6 weeks I'll be able to do bigadv.
Thanks.

I'm taking a break from folding, but I shall return once my new machine is up and running.
