posted this in the software section, but got reccomended to come here, so could admin please close/delete the other thread?
cheers.

trying to get into the folding scene with the phenom using the smp client. Everything was working fine and dandy for a few months, but in the last week or so, when i fire it up, task manager says it only ever uses 25%, even though its set to use all 4 cores.
The little core monitor gadget i have shows the program is still being bounced around the cores, but none of them hit 100% (ie, it seems to use about 25% of each core).

ideas?

i would double check when starting the client you see the lines
if you see this twice, MPI is working
if you see this twice, MPI is working

if not you will need to reinstall MPI to get the client to run on all 4 cores again

well i did a complete reinstall of everything. I get that message twice (not sure if it was displaying before, forgot to check...). everything went fine in the setup untill i ran it for the first time, but now it cant seem to find the work server:

i guess this last bit is something really simple that ive missed (i allowed it through windows firewall, and even tried disabling it)

edit: if i run the exe directly (ie, without the -smp) it will happily download and start chugging away, but i then shut it down and rebooted with the -smp i just get FILE_IO_ERROR

edit edit: it sorted the io error out and now its back to the cant find server loop in the image

restarted the client, no difference.
restarted the pc, no difference.
bah.

edit: no im not using the advmethod ... what does it do? (pretty new to all this...)

-advmethod flag allows you to crunch a3 units which offer better points per day providing you complete within the deadline. As an example my X2 240 @ 3.6 completes one frame in 10:30s so you would be looking at arond 5-6 mins a frame absolute quickest.

Im currently running a P6063 and producing 2750ppd so you would be expecting around 6000ppd

However to maximise you output you will need to use a passkey so you can you can take advantage of the bonus system

As above really. Go here: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py

Enter a valid email address and you will be sent a 20-digit key. Copy it. Now close your Folding client if it is still running, and in the client folder delete the client.cfg file. Now restart the client. You should get the configuration section again.

Enter all the usual answers, and when it asks for your passkey, right-click the title-bar, Edit>Paste. Then carry on.

When you get Acceptable size of work assignment and work result packets (bigger units
may have large memory demands) -- 'small' is <5MB, 'normal' is <10MB, and
'big' is >10MB (small/normal/big) [normal]?

Enter "big".

When asked if you want to change advanced settings, say Yes.

When it asks Set -advmethods flag always say Yes. Carry on with the config.

Opting for big WUs and advmethods gives you the largest possible selection of available WUs, which means you will hopefully get some work! With the A3 work units, you need to complete 10 of them successfully before you start receiving bonus points for them, so expect lower scores for the first few days.

If you ever plan to run another SMP client on a different machine [or ever need to reinstall it] always use your passkey or that client may not receive bonuses.

It was probably running on one core because you got a single-core WU becuase there were no a1 or a2 units. I think the older SMP units are all but gone so a3 is the only game in town.

well thanks for all the info people.
im pleased to say that by adding the -advmethods it found a unit and now seems to be happily crunching away on all four cores :)
