Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 10th April 2008

Q. Anyone folding on Vista, 32 or 64?, with VMware Linux SMP? Wondering if I should move from XP now that SP1 is out when I upgrade.

Been running Linux VMs with Vista 32 for a couple of weeks now with no problems. I've got 11 days till my "free month" is up with my Vista install during which time I'll pick up a copy of Vista 64.

I've been running VMWare linuxSMP on x64 Vista for over a year now and it's always been grand.
Thanks for that.

Free month:confused: Glad to know you've not had problems, theheyes.

An email has said VMware server 2.0 Beta 2.0 is out but I'll stick with 1.05 for now.

Yay broke the 10,000 barrier for the first time in months (probably thanks to someone else tho).
guessing in you're back to the E2180 there won't be a problem this week even if you do end up getting mystery WUs
Just thought I'd best let you know, the mystery crunchers (backup non-SMP clients on two of my SMP boxen) have been tracked down and expunged, though they'll drop one more WU each at some point (dunno when as they only hoover up spare CPU cycles not consumed by VMWare).

Most of my machines are now back up and running with shiny new Hardy clients, though I'm starting to suspect something about the Hardy kernel doesn't play nice with VMWare, so may drop back to Gutsy. At least they're all running the same thing now, rather than a random mix of Edgy, Feisty, and Gutsy. :)

Cool. I've only just started folding again having been not-on since last Wednesday or Thursday, so all my points for this week will have been courtesy of you.

What sort of issues have you been having with Hardy? I only had 4 or 5 days with it but found it to be stable. Tho ofcourse that was only a minimal Server install.

I don't do anything but minimal Server installs. :p :)

It's stable but doesn't seem to be maxing out the CPU as much as I'd like. I'm not sure it's Hardy though as both my Q6600 and E6600 boxen are running that and allowing for hardware/BIOS differences (there should be none) the throughput on the Q6600 is 2.4x that of the E6600 (I'd expect 2x). The only difference is the host OS - Windows on the Quad and Linux on the Dual.

So the Q6600 on VMWare is getting x2.4 of the points than the E6600 is getting on a native install?

How many clients on each? May be a cache issue if you're running two on each (the 4mb on the E6600 may not be enough). I know my E6600 was completing two units in ~20mins, whilst my E2180 is taking ~35mins. The only difference is the cache.

Ahh, posted before looking.. 6 processors !! LOL

For some reason I thought you were in the single crunchers list (but you ain't)

I don't have any native Linux clients. The E6600 system has too much history to be changing Linux versions, much as I'd love to.

Getting ~25min on the Q6600 @2.88, and ~30min on the E6600 @2.88.

When I say free, I mean you get 30 days to activate Windows. It was a legal OEM copy I used which was installed on another machine (my MacBook I think). I figured since I've bought God knows how many copies of Windows I'd use this little "grace period" to work out exactly what I needed for the box. It turns out I'm best off with Vista 64 which I'll be buying pretty soon. :)

Have a read through this.

Cheers fella, i'm a reading!

nokinidea What rig you running stormduck?

i.e how the fu...lippping heck did you get to 368 already

I should put it in my sig - my main pc is a Q6600 at 3ghz, 4gb ram. Had it off for 24 hours so you have more time at that position  Back on now though :D And i'm using me mums pc that i've recently built just until the end of the week running 2 processors, then i'll notch it down to run on one all the time but it won't be on very much.

No - once you get settled there's a new version or another scheme for faster crunching and round we all go again

well it keeps things interesting doesn't it

do they do maintenance on wednesday nights as i am having no luck downloading a WU or even the client for my new laptop/server :(
plus if i get it up and running i could add my lappy to no 10 :)

I don't know but when I navigate to the folding@home homepage it just downloads a file.

Not sure what that's all about.

I'd sit tight and try again tomorrow. Welcome to the team. :)

post your fahlog.txt and we'll have a look at it for you.

Also did you tell it to use IE connection settings as that can cause problems, that and telling it to get work without deadlines - either would mess it up
