Just had a thought, would win smp work with half a gig???

I think the most it can use is about 350MB - so it would probably work, but don't expect to be doing much else on that PC at the same time :p

Hey people, getting started on this thing, installed 2 copies of it and it's been running for a few hours now, looking forward to helping you out :)
Name is DjSoulshot, but it'll probably take a day or so before i'm done with this :)

Welcome to the team. May we ask what you are running F@H on?

Sounds like a dual-core of some description so maybe you might want to give SMP a go?

If you want to try Linux [or try Linux inside Windows - yes, it's possible!] then read my SMP Guide thread. It is around here somewhere :p

If you don't fancy Linux, then try the WinSMP client. It has some quirks and apparantly there is a batch file or something that takes some of the quirkyness away :p

EDIT: If someone would care to elaborate on the batch file + usage I will add a Windows SMP client section to my guide. I will also update it to a pdf :)

Welcome :)

Thanks a lot guys, what are the chances of running this sucessfully on a laptop that's offline most of the time, will it somehow notify me when it wants a new workunit or something? I use the laptop for DJ'ing most of the time, and i can't have wireless activated, as it interferes with the program :)
Gonna use my stationary mainly anyway, but could always use a lil' more :)

Welcome to the worlds friendliest folding team!!:)

The standard clients like the one you have installed are ideal for PC's that have either single core processors or are not used 24/7, the deadlines are very reasonable, if you have installed fahmon you will see the deadlines.

With a decent dual core processor that is on for a good chunk of the day it may be worth trying the SMP clients but they have very short deadlines, typically 4 days.

Laptops are generally very slow so even if it were on 24/7 it probably isn't worth it.

Then again, if you have something absolutely mental like a C2D in your lappy then go for it :D

I don't think the Windows SMP client will work without a network connection. It certainly drops dead when it loses connection.

It does work without a connection. What kills it is the change in the state of the connection, ie. when you have a connection on starting the client, but it drops out. If you start the SMP client with no network connection it actually tends to be more robust with changes in the network config!

It depends what CPU is in your laptop. Mine has a Core Duo 1.66, which is good for 600-800ppd running flat out on the SMP client.

Can anyone direct to Windows SMP guide then. I have a 24/7 pc and fancy those big pointers. . . . :D

There is not really a guide to the Windows one at this time... its really easy to install its just like installing the Windows normal core but dont run it as a service...
