Folding@Home Weekly Team News - 15th March 2007

all sorted now (and not planning on turning it off again either :D )
Yeah, I'm hating that bug. I've been running with -oneunit so it stops when it's done so it gives me a chance to reboot or whatever else is necessary during the gaps. I just need to keep an eye on it so it doesn't slack for too long a period of time.

Now that the Windows SMP client is out I suppose it would be appropriate to do a serious revamp of the Folding sticky. I'll be looking to complete write it over this week and next. Is anybody interested in contributing a section?

I'll be looking for completely new sections to cover:
  • Linux SMP
  • Mac SMP
  • Windows SMP
  • Windows GPU
I'm most in need of some help with the GPU client because I don't have a supported GPU for the purposes of demonstration. I have the hardware available to do all the rest. I'll leave some space for the PS3 client when it comes out. I'll need somebody with a PS3 for that one.

the SMP and GPU clients are still beta.
However they're in public beta. If we wrote a section about each I'm betting it would take just minor changes to update it when the stable versions are released. This is what I plan on doing when the v6 client comes out for the sections I've already written.

My 700,000th point turned up at 6 minutes past midnight. I thought I might get it Sunday. I was close. :D

Just in time to get trampled into oblivion by all these upstarts with their shiny new Win32 SMP clients. :( ;)

As a special treat to all those Sir-Tif-é-Kat winners, please let me present you with this lovely cake which was hand prepared earlier today in the OcUK dunjunns.

Cut yourself a slice and give it a taste :D

I'm sure he has his reasons (like paying the electric bill - a PC on 24/7 at load = £200-350 per year in electric so it's not small change) Try and see his side or alturnatively speak to him about what your doing - you never know he might let you borg his work machine ;)
A radical option is give him £150 pounds towards the electric bill - then he's happy and you can fold in peace (and have just earned major brownie points)

yep understandable really when you're the person paying the bill - my parents used to moan when I was back at home for a while

my solution was to sort out broadband (we were on dialup before then - WUs were much smaller :p) which I paid for and networked up my dad's and brother's machines so they got free broadband :)

Half way through my first week of folding@home and I am residing in 463rd place.:)

Puzzled why it says number of processors 2 though, is that because it's a dual core processor?

I believe from the '-configonly' thread that you have set up 2 clients on your computer, this is why you have 2 processors reported :) If you set it up on a different machine aswell you would have 3 seperate processors reported etc etc.
