foobar2000 gets ever closer to that v1.0 release

meh. version numbers are completely meaningless. foobar has kicked ass for years regardless of what version number it is. you only have to look at itunes 9 or windows media player 12 to realise this. :p

agreed.

the only thing i wish Foobar2k did was centre the playlist on the currently playing song, like winamp does.

I've seen some of the customised set ups of Foobar2000 and have really liked the look of them.

The only reason I don't use Foobar is I get frustrated at trying to setup a theme I've downloaded only to find out half the plugins are no longer compatible and no longer worked on.

Can anyone point me to a page of themes where the plugins are guaranteed to work? I saw they have a iPhone plugin with album art support - which is all I really need as an extra.

Very much the same as me, I wish you could just download a pack that has everything :(

not my cup of tea but this contains all the files with an installer.

you do have to read the help files as well though. not everything can be done automagically... :p

I don't mind putting effort in, I used to use MirandaIM with plugins and themes but it's just ridiculous when half the plugins no longer work.

Of course I wouldn't expect plugins to work with some of the latest beta versions but even the old stable versions I've tried in the past didn't work.

Have to say since I started using it I've really liked it.

However - a few issues which perhaps someone could help me with?

Whenever I load Foobar it doesn't read the idv3 tags until the song is played, can I sort it on load? And secondly - not directly a Foobar issue but someone might know - I use CDArt display and the Foobar plugin. However, every time I load Foobar & CDA display, I have to reconfigure CDA to use Foobar, then it works fine (easy to do just a menu option but bloody annoying!)

 never seen that happen before. i've been using foobar for years without seeing that.

here's my latest layout i've been working on. :)

I use an older version of foobar anyway, as I need to use Panels UI component, which isn't compatible with anything after 0.9.5.2.

Works perfectly fine.

I really like foobar and its my main music player, however I really hate all the plugin and version incompatibility issues that it has. For example if I see a theme that I want and try to get it only to find that actually it doesnt work for the latest version, or that I need a plugin but that plugin is old etc.

Which they would just release foobar with all the plugins that majority of people want and with an easy way to use themes.

I really like foobar but find the effort required to get a nice looking config is too much - especially considering most people don't share theirs. The DarkOne and marc's do look pretty good though :).

Mine looks fairly dull in comparison :p.

I wish they would open-source and provide a central source for the latest plugins and configs. I'm sure it would help the project lots.

i think it just got blocked because it broke the terms of the SDK license agreement.

as for components, there's a list of 3rd party ones right on the foobar site. it's up to the developers to get them listed there. most are to do with functionality rather than appearance though.

i must admit, i'm slightly concerned about the immediate future of themeing foobar. panel stack splitter has recently been marked as crashware on the forums (even though it's been rock solid for me). and thankfully it's working in the new v1 beta. but if it gets banned, people will again stick to using old foobar versions like they do with panels UI. and there is nothing out there that compares to what it can do. going back to columns UI/default UI splitters will be no fun at all. :( having said that, i'd still use a vanilla foobar over any other media player out there. it's the core features which make it what it is (well for me it is. i'm sure others will disagree). the eye candy is just a bonus. :p

I've never had any problems with it either - I don't know what a component has to do to earn the title "crashware" (well, "crash", obviously, but how regularly and under what circumstances seems less than clear).

That's very much my feeling - in any case, foobar2000's basic philosophy seems to be the creation of a functional tool with form strictly following that function, and to that end you get the impression that the flashier designs (eg Falstaff) are frowned on and grudgingly tolerated rather than encouraged.

I did go through a phase of creating all sorts of fancy layouts, but in the end keeping up with 3rd-party component updates was just too much hassle, especially when the developers don't have time to maintain them, or Peter says something to upset them and they throw a hissy fit, or they simply lose interest. Nowadays I just stick with the core program and a few major plugins (a couple of them "crashware") and a simple columns_ui layout (I do like to see album art in the playlist).

In a sense, it's a relief, as I was spending more time tweaking and fiddling with the software than I was actually listening to music, which seems to defeat the object of the exercise. :)
