foobar2000 gets ever closer to that v1.0 release

having said that, i'd still use a vanilla foobar over any other media player out there. it's the core features which make it what it is (well for me it is. i'm sure others will disagree). the eye candy is just a bonus. :p

I agree. I've not found a single media player that offers the same level of functionality and features in such a lightweight shell.
My only gripe with it is the lack of eye candy but that looks to be changing. Some of those themes on deviantart actually work out the box and look nice. 18 months ago you could spend an hour just getting a theme working and still have to sacrifice some of the components.

I miss the days of winamp 2 before all major windows audio players were bloatware :(

0.9.4.5 is my favourite release. It's the last one before they completely changed the layout.

@ Pho: That's a really nice and clean looking layout.

but you can easily re-produce that in newer versions. it took me a couple of minutes to knock this up (admittedly i can't hide the column headers)

just stick this in your own custom column.

%album artist% - ['['[%album%] [CD %discnumber%] [#%tracknumber%]']' ]%title%

I know it's possible, but 0.9.4.5 does it all for me without having to tweak anything. I've tried it before on the newer versions of foobar and I was constantly messing with settings. All I have to do when I install 0.9.4.5 is change the colour scheme and I'm good to go.

I certainly didn't "tell it to" split albums in half (both with the same name), and play tracks in some albums in the wrong order for no apparent reason. Default settings.
The point I'm making is that "it" didn't/won't do anything to your library (unlike some other apps which will rename files and/or mess with their metadata unless you're careful).

I guess the problem, if you can call it one, is that there are so many options for sorting and grouping information that any kind of tagging inconsistency will likely be reflected in what you see in the playlist. That's not really the player's fault though, and it's generally easily fixed. :)

Are there any plans for an OSX version? One of the main things I miss on Windows is foobar2k, I don't really like iTunes or VLC... :(
Nope, Windows only, and the developer seems to have zero interest in porting it to other platforms - apparently it's completely dependent on the Windows API and it would effectively need to be rewritten from scratch in any case (from the little I understand about these things).

Still amazed me how much better Foobar is than just about every other media player I've used. Got it nice and simple how I like it but still working on it. Dunno how to get the album art appear in the playlist.

I tired it, but the amount of configuration you have to put in to make it look nice and play a few MP3's was more than I could be bothered with.

No configuration required to play mp3s.

I like foobar but could never get the hang of this theming thing. I like that way it looks like a 'standard' app, anyway.

by default, foobar sorts new files/folders added to your playlist using

Code:
%path_sort%

this replicates the order your files appear in windows explorer. so if tracknumber isn't the first part of the filename, they will appear to be in the wrong order.

but you can change the way foobar sorts incoming files to use tags instead. something like

Code:
%album artist% | %date% | %album% | %discnumber% | %tracknumber% | %title%

you'll find the option to set this under preferences>general in 0.9.x or under "shell integration" in v1.

or you could rename your files so tracknumber goes before title. eg

Code:
01 - blah.mp3

foobar can do this using "file operations". something like

Code:
%tracknumber% - %title%

would do. you'd see a preview of any modifications it makes before you commit. it never touches your files unless you explicitly tell it to.

Dunno how to get the album art appear in the playlist.

you need to use columns UI (alternative interface) to get album art in the playlist.

I see, I can still run it under VirtualBox so it's not the end of the world... And I still boot into XP now and again, if only for the odd steam game. The ASIO plug-in kicks ass also, if you're running a nice soundsystem or headphones...

Is there much new in v1 compared to the latest stable release? I've been using 0.9.6.9 for what seems like forever...

I've just got mine in the album folder and it works fine.

So is foobar better than winamp & if so why/how? From what I do know the ability to play flac files is there but why else? Looks like a lot of tweaking is needed to use it to its full potential.

I used to have big grudges a few years ago before the "Default UI" panel type customisation as I didn't get on with Columns UI. Now though, can knock up a functional layout which doesn't look too bad within half an hour and it's flexible enough to allow some creativity. I'll post up mine later, at work at the moment.

It's just so quick to load and get playing things that it's even in my Startup folder. I actually use Mediamonkey for organisation of my music but prefer Foobar2000 as a player.

Doubt I'll download version 1 until it's actual release, the version I'm running seems fine to me.
