You could also say that defenderes know they will get away with hanging a leg out against Ronaldo, so they do it more often

Not sure how you'd say that after the amount of pens he's won from that sort of incident and that most defenders know that it he looks for every opportunity to go down in the box.

Leave Gerrard out of this :p

I think it would have been harsh to give the penalty. However we all have the benefit of seeing every incident from every angle and in slow motion whereby the ref's have to make an instant decision for players who are running at great speed.

the fact it would be a free-kick outside the box surely means it would be a penalty in it?

We all know it doesn't work like that though.
If refs were consistent and clamped down on all fouling in the box, it would be fine (with a prior communication to all clubs that this was happening).
The problem as it stands is that you would end up with some games having 8 pens and other games none, if refs interpreted things differently.
8pens in every match would be fine, it would be consistent and players would quickly learn what to expect.

I was talking about pens from a similar incident, 1 earlier this season which even you weren't happy with and the 1 (with no contact) vs Spurs last season.

He has also not been awarded a lot more than he has actually got (in other words he gets less than 50% of the incidents awarded as pens) and considering his accuracy/the amount of goals he actually scores, as a defender its sometimes worth a gamble depending on the circumstance etc to hang a leg out
