Football manager 2016

Make sure one of your coaches is a competent tactical coach. Make sure team training is set to low/balanced and make sure your individual training is working for players.

I'm playing with Peterborough in one of my saves. In a bit of a surprise result I have got them promoted in the first season, which was nice.

What I have also discovered, is that young talent, and by young I mean 14-17 year olds for the future, are generally dirt cheap at this level (Champs). When you hit the BPL the talent increases exponentially in price. I've managed to scout half a dozen future prospects, and have just bought 3 for less than £300,000 all in. They are likely to be extremely good players in my experience, possibly world class with the right training/game time. The youngest is a 14 year old Serbian and he has a lot of potential. All of them will require work permits however, so I won't be able to play them for many seasons, but that is the whole point of buying young. I've recently found a Belgian feeder club and although the game is much harder now in that respect it also handles its feeders better. I should be able to get them all permits within just 2 seasons which is excellent. So by aged 19 or so I could have some real talent in my squad. Even if these players do not work out as I think they might, I can sell them on for a massive profit in a few years. But fingers crossed, they meet all the criteria of world class in my past experience.

Scouting is a lot harder this time round. But this is how I do it.

Hire the best scouts, regardless of where they come from. But make sure they have good abilities to judge and high determination. This is important as it will allow them to scout other areas of the world and keep their scouting knowledge. They will quickly lose it otherwise.

The most efficient way to improve your scouting knowledge other than scouting the individual country is to hire coaches. Former assistant managers usually offer the best scouting knowledge. So if you can hire an assistant manager as a coach, he might have up to 10 different countries in his 'database'. This gives you an instant scouting boost. I've got 12 scouts and 9 coaches and have 46% worldwide knowledge using this method. But in the past I've had up to 90% worldwide knowledge although that was in FM15. This is most definitely a tougher prospect. Scouting knowledge takes longer to achieve I've noticed.

Nice dutch wonderkid there.. Looks like he may turn into something special. How did you find him out of interest?

How are people getting on with work permits? I'm still in the Champs so that might not help me but I am struggling with permits. I have 8 players under 21's whom I have scouted and bought over the last few seasons. But they all require permits. 2 players were given permits almost immediately and have turned into first team players but the others are from the darkest depths of the planet and require Spanish or other feeders. I've got both a Spanish affiliate and a Belgium one but that one takes up to 5 years to gain a permit. It's a bit of a nightmare to be honest and its' a lot harder than it was in 15.

Something I am seeing quite a lot. I pipped Blackburn and Shef Wed to first place in the Champs last season and they then didn't win the playoffs. This season both teams are near the relegation zone! It's most bizarre. Does this happen in reality? I seem to be seeing it with alarming regularity. Brighton were 4th or 5th last season and this season they are near the bottom too. All the teams I was up against last season who were really pushing me hard are this season facing relegation.

It's not exactly the same at all. At the end of the day it's about football and there are only so many ways to kick a ball. But under the belt there are loads of differences. I'm finding it very difficult compared to last year, especially with the new work permit mechanics. I managed to get into the Premier League after years of trying and keep losing my best players due to release clauses. The bigger clubs make silly offers which I can't compete with.

I'm struggling to use my wingers though. I usually have two full backs who are fast players. Usually over 15 acceleration and pace so they are nippy. But the fullbacks are not scoring like last year. One of them is now world class too, but he just doesn't score.

I tend to use tactics suited to the players, but generally i like fast wingers. AML or AMR, particularly. Work wonders for me. A single quality TM or poacher is great if you have the wingers. Then I like 2 defenders who stay back at all times. Big, strong guys. Two fast wing backs helps too. A decent midfield, either 2 CM's who are ball playing or box to box, and a good DM (usually an anchor) is essential if you have a single striker.

I tend to use fluid and control throughout, unless I'm seriously out played then I swap to defend, and slow.

I keep experiencing crash dumps and freezes which is very unusual and very frustrating. I reported it to SI a fair while back, but was hoping the 16.3 patch would remedy it. I might have to remove all the mods I've got installed and see if it happens then, but the mods add such a lot to the game :-(

Is the player a natural midfielder though? He might be a natural right winger but has been played out of position. Either way that doesn't sound completely correct in your game. Lots of things determine how 'natural' a player is at a certain position, including hidden attributes like adaptability and such like. Also, are they left or right footed, and how strong is that foot. Things like that effect natural position.

In your case, if he is showing bright green as an attacking winger, there is no way he will also be a natural DLP. They are obviously completely different roles.

Well I began a new save with the latest official 16.3 database. Started out as unemployed, with very little experience. Have managed to get a job with Bishops Stortford and won promotion in my first season. :-) I won the playoff so dead chuffed with that. Unfortunately my best players would not renew their contracts so I lost them but I've been given a relatively healthy £6,000 a week wage budget to find replacements.

This is where the game is at it's best. Right at the bottom.

Meh, I get bored when you start right at the bottom. League Two, maybe conference is my limit. I'm really enjoying trying to dominate with Newcastle. Trying to get them to the top of everything for now.

The only BPL team I've ever started a save with was as QPR. I've never played with any of the big clubs. I don't know why it is - maybe I'm worried about the board expectations expecting to win everything in the first season. It takes me a good 12-18 months to get a feel for the club and to develop it with an excellent back room and youth setup. I would feel under too much pressure.

I'm doing really well with Bishops :D. I won the FA Trophy in my first season in the National conference. Now I'm in my second season and I'm in first spot with a nice 10 point buffer between me and the next team as I break into January.

They only have a 548 seater stadium however  That will surely cripple me in due course, but I haven't the means to upgrade or expand. I expect I will win promotion to League 2 shortly, in which case I want to stay there for several seasons. I'm in no rush to get into the BPL. With my paltry stadium and back room facilities I want to upgrade these as soon as possible.

I have managed to find a couple of really decent players as it goes. One I sold for £80,000 in the end. He was a 16 year old defender, with a reasonable amount of potential. He was a free transfer so he didn't cost me a penny either. I've just bought another young player off QPR. £6,000. He's a 19 year old right back, with a lot of potential. I'd say he will end up being a very good Premier league player providing I can play him enough and I can keep hold of him. Either way, he should be worth 6 figures in the future so I'm hoping that is my stadium upgrade sorted :D

Another player I picked up on a free, is Sean Murray. He's turns into a really good lower league player. He's usually free, or very cheap, and he is realistic in his demands. I seem to find him every club I play at some point or other. In this save he has developed into a bit of a killer player. He's already scored 6 goals for me this season and he is capable of playing as a central midfielder or a right winger so he's useful. According to my scouts he is a very capable League 1 player, so I expect I will lose him this coming transfer window. But hopefully I'll make a big profit.

Weird!

I'm about 12 years into my game with Celtic so 90% of the players in the game are now regens and the furthest I've got is the last 16 of the CL.

I've sold big so now I just need to spend big but attracting players is a problem!

That's the problem with the Scottish system. Even in their top tier you cannot attract the talent. I have to say, I do enjoy the challenge however. I managed to get Ayr into the Premiership and the only way I could compete in the CL was to develop my own players from 15/16. As Celtic you have top facilities so you should be able to train your youth players very well, but as Ayr I had to first develop my back room and training facilities which took years.

The thing to do is to find really high potential youth players, which don't cost a packet. From the likes of South America and such like. For some reason the work permit requirements are different in Scotland to England, so you seem to be able to attract the youth players easier. I managed to find world class players this way in my save. Some I couldn't keep hold of but I ended up selling them for a huge profit, and by huge, I mean £10,000,000+. I was able to compete this way, but it was by and large a challenge, even at that level.

I've done the same with Celtic, bought numerous youth players from South America and I sold 2 last season for £25M each. I've got £44M to spend and 300k worth of wages to spend but I just can't get anyone thay would improve my team and squad. If they're top players they always moan about wanting to move to a team that could win the CL.

Yeah, I feel your pain. I guess it's club/competition reputation, which is probably realistic. But the money you can invest in your club is incredible. I didn't even get that with Ayr, and I got them into the quarter finals of the CL :D

Quick question guys, prior to a game, opposition instructions, if you set these in tactics do they automatically get applied when a game starts? I've noticed when I get to a game and go through the steps of opposition instructions, team talks etc that what I've set for tight marking, show onto weak foot etc isn't actually showing?

If you want specific instructions then you set them every match prior to a game. If you want a more generic set of instructions you set them in the tactics screen and they are followed every match.

If you want your assistant manager to manage these instructions, and for him to set the instructions so you don't need to you need to make sure he is tactically aware. My Assistant Manager has a tactical of 13.

I feel your pain, I am very much in the same predicament whenever I get really into a save. Almost every PL team that I start to win with ends up like this, even when I start out at the very bottom of the pile and work my way up. Mind you, it takes a long time to get there.

In one of my best PL saves my best striker who was world class and some was netting 60 goals on average per season :D No club could afford his talent, even when I had silly offers. Likewise I could not buy anyone. Even 15 year old regens were costing £10 million upwards. It felt quite ridiculous to be honest, but I don't know if this is realistic or not. In the end I would just buy a handful of young players and keep them in my under 21's. I would train them as well as my coaches and facilities would allow and would use them in my first team as soon as they were ready. It was the only way I could build a fresh squad. Even mediocre players would cost silly money by this time. It's one aspect of the game I do not like to be honest.

I'm now managing MK Dons, in the Champs. But I'm really struggling with debt. I am about £4 million in the red, and have already survived a takeover. The money that these teams swallow up is incredible.

lol.. Do you have the editor? If so, check them out. See if they have a sugar daddy, and see how much money they actually have. I've never heard of a club being that much richer than Barca unless they are winning everything? I've often gone over 2028 too. A lot of things change, but the consistency of the majority of the main clubs is pretty accurate I'd say. The big clubs are still in the PL in my save. There are one or two novelties but a lot of it is from my own doing. I got fired from Kilmarnock right in the first few seasons, but they now consistently finish in the top 3 in the SPL. I built them up with a cracking squad, even though my tactics failed miserably I see them doing much better themselves :D
