Football SPOILERS 11/12 April

that Hargreaves wouldnt be fit as his knee problems were being reported all summer, the fact we only had two decent centerbacks, one right back and one left back.
All parts of the squad that needed reinforcing more urgently than upfront, and all of them are now showing why they were more urgently needed.
.

There was no indication that OH's knees where any worse - I admit it was obvious they hadnt gotten any better - but I was still hoping for the 25 games or so he managed last season rather than the.... 5 or so he actually managed

Well actually I think its Rio thats let the CB's down from his back problem, Evans has done exceedingly well upto recently given his limited experience (remember he was one of the few unchanged players during the run of no goals conceeded for 14 games) - its just for his age he has been asked to play too many games

Left back and right back dont need replacing either - Da Silva's are fine, again how did anyone know that Brown would be out for the majority of the season and both of the brothers would have long injury spells

Because:
A- All the reports over the summer was that Owen Hargreaves was still suffering with both knees.
B- No top team only has two first choice center backs, they all have a minimum of three.
C- We have Wes Brown with a history of long term lay offs, Gary Neville who hasnt played in nearly 2 years and is 34 years old, We have Patrice Evra and............. no one else, O'shea can play full back, but nobody in their right mind wants him there unless there really isnt anyone else.
D- the Di silva brothers were never EVER going to be anything other than running out in the carling cup and reserves this season, with injuries to our limited defensive players they have been forced into action, and both have suffered long term injuries as a result.

As stated - NO difference to last season, when he managed five times as many games

B- No top team only has two first choice center backs, they all have a minimum of three..

Chelsea have only got two - and imo Evans is far superior to either of the other choices

WB played a lot of games in the last two seasons - its only hindsight that you are able to say in any definitve way that he was bound to be injured for a lengthy period this season

Think about it - Evra had a pretty long period of suspension and injury around the time we went to Japan - and with the issues on the other side , this made it more obvious. But seeing as how well Rafael did on his first appearance against Arsenal , I dont see any reason why he couldnt have played more games without the injuries he incurred

Really we have Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans and Brown (not to mention O'Shea and Neville in emergencies) I don't think there are many clubs that have more than that.

while this is true - I really dont like 1st team players being played out of position (like Brown playing at CB, who can do a decent job - but GN in the centre )

Utility men like OShea is one thing - but if Brown gets injured then its two positions that then need to be covered while he is out

It smacks of asking for trouble to my mind - I guess its no different to asking Ronaldo to play right up front or Rooney on the wing, it just feels different for some reason

no team ever has as many squad selection problems due to injuries than newcastle, everton have had bad luck, but season after season we must average 8-11 first team regulars out injured every weekend.

that wont matter soon because we will buying championship players, least they wont twist on if its too cold in the winter or they have a saw ankle :D

And prior to that Wes brown could barely string 2 matches together for the vast majority of his career without consequently being off for 6 months.

I can keep pulling them apart, they are clear mistakes and misjudgments that have been made.

Forgetting Alex?

Do you really rate Alex as high as the other two?

He is definitive 2nd choice imo (not what was being asked in the original question)

In 9 years or so he has had over 300 appearances - average 35 appearances or so a year isnt that bad at all considering Gary Neville was infront of him and a regular English International up until a few years ago (the time frame we are discussing)

(if my memory is correct his first season in the first team was 99 - being an unused sub in the CL final amongst others)

I think you are over exagerating somewhat

No, I'm not.
Wes Brown is one most injury prone players playing in the league.
He signed in 1996, and by the way.
He didnt play a single game in the 99-00 season through injury, medial ligaments 01-02 out for 4 months, 02-03 out for the first 4 months with a broken ankle ending that season with another cruciate ligament injury, the first half of 03-04 again through injury, achillies and thigh out for three months in 05-06, and this season has played, what 1 match or half a match?

Combine that with the constant strains, knocks and pulls he gets, he has a history of being injured.
bring em on.

well somehow he has still amassed over 300 appearances - most of that time playing 2nd fiddle to GN

I still think thats pretty good considering anything/everything

He was 16 when he signed - he wouldnt have been anywhere near any 1st team appearances at that point or for a good year or two after
