Hi

My new Mobo has a feature to allow you to save a backup of you OS when its fresh to use as recovery - I wnat to use this feature

My current HDD is somehing liek this

40GB - Windows Vista OS only
40GB - Spare (to use Ubuntu hwen i can be bothered to learn it)
220GB - NTFS Space I use for my media files that I downlaod via Vista

I need around 20GB space for this new feature and I want to partition it on the last partition above.

My question is - if I reduce the 220GB partition above to 200 GB will I lose any files? (it currently has around 100GBs or so free

Secondly, what would happen to an install of Vista if I changed its partition size? Would it bork up? I gave it 40GB but aside from the OS install I never use it for actual files so I could just halve it down to 20 and use the other 20 for my new recovery section.

Also, does anyone know how much a new install of Ububtu takes?

I will be using GPARTED for all my partitioning - from the uBubtu live CD

Thanks

Messing with partition sizes always carries some risk with it (shrinking more so than expansion).

I've had to do it numerous times when creating images for work machines and never had a problem, but then I've never been concerned with data loss while I do it.

Do a scandisk before you start to make sure you are error free, then go for it.

BTW, you can carry out partition modifications in Vista, if it goes wrong then at least you can blame a company for something you've bought (assuming you have). Rather than a free download.
