I don't think it's fake, It appears just to be time lapse photography rather than video? Correct me if I'm wrong though.
 
I don't think this was the point of the video to make people believe they fly with so little separation.

Indeed.

It's much easier to visualise the flight path if there's an actual line of planes rather than just the one.
 
The majority of those are the same plane just superimposed on themselves over and over, which gives the precise look the video needs.

Although believe it or not the navigation systems onboard really are accurate enough to do something similar. Whilst flying its very common to have 2 aircraft on the same airway but separated by 1000ft and they are both exactly on the sameline. The INS that we use are based on laser-ring gyros and are pinpoint accurate. They are backed up with GPS and ground based nav as well so can give position down to a couple of meters.
