Ford focus 2 litre TDCI or 1.6 TDCI ?

330Ci barely managed 20mpg,

Don't worry, Fox will be along in a minute to tell you that there's something wrong with your engine because you should be getting 39mpg.

The MK1 has a completely different older engine which is known to be not great on fuel..

Doesn't matter. The 2.0 doesn't do 40mpg average. I had a 2008 2.0 car and I from memory it did about 34mpg running around Swindon up to Northampton and back again over a couple of days.

In mixed, real world driving, absolutely no chance.

I will be using it mainly on motorway roads

Who gives a **** about "mixed, real world driving"? ;)

A mate of mine has a Mk1 2.0 petrol, and averages around 35mpg. Depressing as my 620ti gets 30, and that is nearly double the power.

I'd be having the derv personally.

The Mk.I just isn't good with fuel. Thankfully the Mk.II is a lot better.

Take the ST170 as an example. It's a 2.0 Focus with VVTi, but it drinks like a fish given it's power.

I drove the 1.6 & 2.0 TDCi when I was looking for my Cmaxx. Coming from a 195bhp Diesel vectra I found the 1.6 a bit gutless and lacking in power it felt sluggish. The 2.0 is a much better engine and mine averages around 55mpg with conservative driving so still good on fuel..

You must drive it like a granny. I knew a few people with them 10 years ago and they used to average low 20's. My Mondeo averages about 30mpg though it's either stuck in traffic or driven hard.

By comparison my ST and 330Ci barely managed 20mpg, and my current run about a 1.3 Fiesta only manages 38mpg so the Focus 1.6 TDCI is very good.

I'm sorry, but your driving style must be completely rubbish, or you spent your entire day going around town.

Oops, looks like i beat him to it. For a healthy 330i, it should be getting around 20 mpg in town 26/27mpg on A-Roads and about 35+ on motorways. Most of my mileage is on fast A roads and in towns, where i don't give a crap about economy and i still get 26+mpg.

I'm swinging towards the 2litre now but Zetec S or Titanium? The car will have to last me a good 6 - 10 years.

But then for the money I will spend on a focus I have seen the Skoda Octavia VRS 2litre diesel..........

Well, the Octavia VRS TDI is 170ps, but you won't get anywhere near the MPG from it that you're expecting. As someone who owns that very engine, you'll get in the low-mid 40s MPG.
