Ford Focus performance?

I've got a 1.6 and I'm loving it. I average about 500 miles a week and I've never had a numb bum or anything. Reasonable mpg (I usually get about 45mpg or so).
However it is almost impossible to change the bulbs on the passenger side. I almost had to take the battery out for one of them before a small-handed friend offered to help. One dude I know tried jacking his car up and going in from the bottom to chnage to bulb. Not something I would recommend though.

Totally agree, could someone please put him back in his box or show him some forum etiquette / rules, you want a car ask in that thread, get ideas either ask IN THAT THREAD, or post a new one in a few days, not with everyones suggestions, afterall this is overclockers.co.uk no james07.co.uk.......
LOL, classic. Nice one Firestar :D

The above has probably been answered but I'll just in my 2p:

You've got the Mk1 Focus, then the MK1 Facelift (often referred to as the Mk1.5) and then the 2005+ MK2 Focus.

I owned a mk1 then a mk1.5 and now a mk2. :D Superb cars imo.

Now I'll assume you're talking about the Mk1...

The 1.4/1.6 units are totally different engines to the 1.8/2.0 units.

1.4 is gutless, stay away.

* The 1.8/2.0 Zetec units in my experience are very thirsty engines. I used to have bad fuel economy in my 2.0l, and even worse if I drove it hard.

The 1.6 in my opinion is a good combination between economy and power.

Overall, cracking cars... mine never had an easy life and nothing ever went wrong with it. Infact, they're so good, I keep buying them. :)

* Everyone with a Focus will tell you this. Everyone with a Mondeo will tell you the opposite about the Zetec units... maybe it's just that us Focus drivers tend to drive faster? ;)

If you want any more info about them or want suggestions about what to look for etc then I'm happy to help... or head on over to ffoc.co.uk.

Cheers.

Which would be the preferred choice between a Ford Focus 1.6 and a Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi? I've had a drive of both and the TDCi was brilliant, loads of torque and plenty of pickup

However I've heard stories about the TDCi having a few niggles so the question beckons, which would be the better choice between them? :o

BeatMaster :D

The 1.8 TDCi is a cracking engine, I love it.

However, if you mean the newer focus, id say the 1.6 TDCi as its cheaper to buy and a little better on the diesel. Performance wise the 1.8 TDCi is a touch quicker, but not much in it.

Do you mean between the 1.6 petrol and the 1.8 TDCi or...

between the 1.6 TDCi and the 1.8 TDCi?

Sorry should have said, 1.6 Petrol vs 1.8 TDCi on the Mk1.5 :)

It'll cost about £500-£1000 more for the TDCi but packs a nice amount of power

Worth it for the TDCi.

Just make sure its a 115bhp and not the 100bhp.

Not thats its a problem to up the 100 to 115 anyway.

As above, the TDCi is a cracking engine.

After having a mk2 with the 1.6 TDCi engine for a weekend, even that was surprisingly powerful, very quick to pick up and loads of torque, it was very nice to drive... although lower down in the RPM it still sounded like a tractor!

I've not heard any bad stories about their reliability, infact all the Foci' Diesel owners I've talked to have nothing but good things to say about them. Of course you will hear of the odd cursed Focus with everything going wrong with it, just like you do with all makes and model of car.

If you're buying second hand you'll really have to weigh up the odds between petrol and a dirty diesel though.

Aside from the better MPG figure you have to remember:

- The cost of diesel is more expensive.
- Need more servicing.
- They're more expensive to buy in the SH market.
- They're dirty tractors. ;)

What year are you looking at?

There is potentially more to go wrong with the TDCi. Early ones (2002 and earlier) are prone to injector failure and they're £200+ a piece to replace.
