Forgot to tell Insurer about Private Plate Change... Pulled over for no insurance

Surely this is just an admin error.

I've had a typo on a policy which had the wrong reg in the past and that didn't invalidate my insurance.

This must happen all the time.

It's unlikely that they would declare the car not to be covered, but will depend on getting the right person on the phone as above....which could be a challenge

Yes but surely in this situation the previous insurance certificate is void anyway, so wouldn't cover you to drive other cars.

The policy still exists though as does the car which is covered, just like it would if I set fire to my current certificate or took my Mondeo for a spin & the plates fell off.

It is the physical car that is covered not the plate, this is why imported vehicles that have plates which UK company internal systems can't reckognise get insured on the chassis number instead, you then end up with a cert with no plate on there at all, the field gets left blank.

You are insured.

Your insurance company is HIGHLY unlikely to have not insured you on the basis you changed the car onto a cherished plate. In theory your old VRM is still attached to the VIN of your vehicle. it takes some time for that to expire.

Voidable and Void are two very different things. Your insurance may be considered voidable on the basis the registration is incorrect but as stated above, Admiral are not going to void it.

^ This. I called up admiral a year or two ago to change the plate to my private one and I happened to ask if it would have meant I was uninsured. The girl on the phone told me that it wouldn't have been a problem, it would just have caused a lot of hassle with paperwork and stuff, but ultimately they would have insured me.

Update: Spoke with Admiral, fortunately the guy was pretty sharp and they assured me that everything is fine and that they would have still covered a car accident at the time of my traffic stop regardless, and they sent me the following email:

Hi this is to confirm you the your Audi RS4 Quattro is insured with us with registration number XX_OLDREG_XX which was changed to new reg number on 01/11/14 to XX_NEWREG_XX but the car is still the same and insured with us.
He also said feel free to tell the police to contact admiral for confirmation if they have any queries, but I have nothing to worry about. Though in future please remember to inform them in the event of any policy changes.

Sounds like everything should be ok. Will be going into the police station later today to sort. Fingers crossed there won't be much bother. :D

I've recently (last 2 weeks or so) dealt with Admiral for a claim and they are possibly the worst insurance company I have ever had to deal with. I don't envy you op but I do hope you can get it worked out.

I had the complete opposite experience.

Call them as soon as I could after the accident, quick to answer the phone, sort out when I could take it to a approved repair centre and got it booked in. All very easy + efficient though the repair centre took about 2 weeks to sort my car (more an issue with the repair centre - not admiral).

My story is something like this: My Mrs had an accident on the 14th Oct. They recovered the car that morning and took it somewhere, For days I was calling them giving them information and inquiring about what was going on, I seemed to keep getting replies like the car is at this place and we are moving it to another approved repairer closer to home.

So five days pass and finally I get annoyed and call them up to find out what the hell is going on and also why even after paying extra for some enhanced courtesy car cover have I still not been offered a car? As it turns out something in admirals policy doesn't allow you the use of a courtesy car unless the car has been inspected and a decision made as to repair of a write off, to cut a long story short a manager offered to hire me a car through help hire. They admitted that they had been overly slow in getting any resolution and got another company involved who dropped a car off at my mrs work. All this after 2 seperate conference calls to the dvla for both me and my mrs.

After 2 weeks everything is now resolved. For comparison, 2 years ago I wrote off a car badly and privilage sorted everything in just a few days and had me in a courtesy car within a few hours.

I had no problem with them authorising the car to be repaied where I wanted, but they clearly weren't interested in closing out what should have been a very simple claim.

Courtesy car was easy, but it was provided by the repairing garage and not Admiral

I had to call then every few weeks, only to find out they hadnt done anything since I last forced them to take some sort of action.

Again though once everything was agrees my excess refund etc was all swift.

Been out all day, only just got back in and went to the local station down my road, luckily they are open 24h.

The chap at the front desk took a copy of my latest certificate along with a copy of the email from Admiral, said all seems to look ok, and he'd send it off to Surrey Police to be processed. No further action needed on my part :D

Hopefully that'll be the end of it

No idea as to the legal nature of it and hopefully common sense will prevail but I know someone who was in a similar position and ended up just paying a FPN in the end (no points or confiscation, etc.) he just wanted it done and dusted no idea as to the actual technicalities of it.

EDIT: IIRC though he'd insured the car on the personalised plate and forgot to put it on so not quite the same.

Just get the insurance changed to the new VRM, and take two documents which show the same VIN no. with each VRM.
You are insured to the minimum legally required standard and if some dunce at Admiral thinks otherwise, report back.
