I had xp installed vista and haven't been back.

Can is simply format the xp drive and delete the xp entry in the vista boot menu. Or is there any files on the xp drive that vista uses for boot options?

I've screwed boot files before, No way do I want to do that again. But that was formatting vista. So the other way around.

Hey AcidHell2, sorry i kind of missed this thread.

What you will want to do is boot into Windows Vista and format the partition that Windows XP is currently installed on. Since the Vista bootloader has control of the boot, there is no need to modify the boot.ini of XP.

Now insert your Windows Vista DVD into your drive and restart your machine and then press any key when it comes up with the little prompt. Then click on the "Repair your computer" option and then select the appropriate Operating System (Microsoft Windows Vista). Once the "System Recovery Options" window appears, choose the "Command Prompt" option.

Once the Command Prompt appears type the following:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr (Enter)

And then:

bootrec.exe /fixboot (Enter)

Now exit the prompt and re-boot your machine and it should boot straight into Windows Vista. :)

Hi firewizard, this didn't work. I've magined to remove the xp one by doing the following.

bcdedit /enum
bcdedit /delete {ntldr} /f

But I still have the xp recover console that I installed on to the pc rather than just have on the xp cd. This still shows up on the vista boot screen.

Ok cool AcidHell2, sorry I wasn't able to help you out. The whole Dual Booting scenario, weather someone is looking to set one up or removing the actual configuration seems to be a right pain in the backside all the time. :p:)

(Edit) Not sure why i put "Ok cool" at the end. :p:D

Sure is, thanks for the help, going to play a round with the partitions and add another hdd. Just downloading all my software now. Then I'll format.

Nothing worse than formatting then waiting for drivers and software to download.

I have found vista has a very good ctartup recovery system, I tri-boot ubunut, xp and vista at some points, and vista has survived it.
